Thread: best water repellent product?

Started 3 years, 2 months ago by markgsnw
I need to renew the durable water repellent on my gear. I've not had success with Nikwax products. Camp Dry works OK but doesn't last very long (and burns off a lot of brain cells while applying). I recall that Heavy Duty Scotchgard worked reasonably well on my stich. I'm seeing Granger Super Proof and ReviveX as other options (I'd prefer to stick with a spray on rather than a wash in)....

We used to blast Carharts with scotchgaurd for snoboarding..worked very..very well... Just a thought..but the best I've found is a good rain jacket or suit to throw over your gear when the rain gets heavy..

I also have had good luck using Nikwax products on my Aerostitch. Nikwax is a little on the expensive side but it worked very well. I think it is important to follow the directions explicitly, especially the part about stopping the washer and letting it soak for 15 minutes.

On the Nixwax I've found best results to be an entire bottle for one garment in a front load type washer. If you have a regular top load washer even one bottle per garment is not enough becuae it get too diluted. Instructions on the bottle says a capful per garment ( I think) but when I did that it did not work well at all. At the end of the day I've had best results with the Heavy Duty Scotch...

I recommend Blue Magic Tectron Wet Guard. This stuff repels water like it was made by ducks. I sprayed a tent with it last summer, and it rained so hard we didn't have to go to the showers at Pedros. The inside of my tent was dry. Check it out.

I use the heavy duty ScotchGard in the teal colored cap. Has worked great for years. Stitch, tents, etc.

Check with these guys: http://www.rainypass.com/index.htm They are Gore Tex factory approved and the only BMW authorized tailoring service in the US. They will sell you the product or do it for you. They have encountered some problems with Nix wax and no longer use it.

The answer to your question, and probably all questions about waterproofness, is in the new (January 2007) edition of CityBike. In a word: Nik Wax is probably the easiest, real solution that is easy on you and the enviroment. Try to find it on www.citybike.com but it may take a couple of days or weeks for it to get posted.
