Thread: ban from public tracker?

Started 1 month, 1 week ago by NYTReader
I think my home IP has been banned at openbittorrent. Here is what I have: - I cannot scrape the tracker from home (well it works maybe very fifth try) - I have no problems pinging it from home (no lost packets from tracker.openbittorrent.com) - I have no problems scraping the tracker from my university - there are no problems listed for the tracker at host-tracker.com Is there a way to tell for...

- I cannot scrape the tracker from home (well it works maybe very fifth try) it's a very halfassed ban if it occassionally fails. i don't ever remember hearing of a ban that occassionally let someone through in the same circumstances.

Thanks for the responses qm and Fred. If it is not a ban is there something else that might be causing this? Maybe at the ISP level? Seems very odd.

if you are banned you should get something like "this ip or account has been banned from this tracker" or something like it. it may be a number of things like bad router on the internet or home router, bad dns resolver server (i should know my isp has a bad dns resolver and does not want to admit it).

It could be fuckery at the tracker level too, Openbittorrent doesn't quite have it's sealegs yet, and is crashy. Keep your DHT open and you will grab peers.

Thanks for all of the pointers guys. It sounds like the consensus is that I have been banned, but that the problem might lie with my ISP (Time Warner). At any rate I am still having sporadic problems which is driving me bonkers.

There is also utorrent which can play multiple ports so you can use non-standard ports which can get around your ISP'S blocking specific port blocking. There are forums out there for beating ISP's at this game, and a new protocol called One Swarm which is brand new. Don't give up hope.

You might try using a proxy to help diagnose the problem.

Grab a VPN.......solves most problems. The Swedish ones are pants, the Swiss ones are WAYYYY better. Better a bank in Zürich than Stockholm.... hint hint swissvpn? same speed as your isp..........................shhhh.

Thanks also for the proxy suggestion guys: really good. I am going to try fiddling around with a few more settings before then. Hopefully this will work.

I wanted to follow-up on my previous post with some more infos: maybe this will allow the techie folks here to diagnose my problem. I looked at a set of torrents which have openbittorrent as a tracker. Among these, I only seem to have problems with certain torrents. That is, some torrents which have openbittorrent as their exclusive tracker do not have problems while others do (problems scraping and unable to find peers). I took the problem...

The Pirate Bay now has something called Magnet Links. You leftclick on the magnet icon, copy 'link location', then go to Utorrent, click 'from the web' and that pastes your magnet directly to Utorrent. At least that's how I do it, as officially, Utorrent doesn't have Magnet support yet Also, if you allow legacy connections and check "forced encryption" that can hide your ass from your ISP....

NYTReader wrote: Is there a way to tell for sure if I have been banned by openbittorrent? And if so, is there a way to get the ban removed? OpenBitTorrent is plagued by spammers and other undesirables, so if your IP has been used to abuse it before (maybe someone else had it before you) then it could be banned. Good luck in getting any answers out of them at all, but it might be worth trying NYTReader wrote: If it is not a ban is there...
