Thread: automatic shift points

Started 2 months, 2 weeks ago by RUN ROD RUN
As some of you know from my other posting of my gear change to 4.10 that took place today … I got thinking about what controls the shift points on the 4 speed automatic. Is it the speed or RPM? I got the speedo recalibrate yesterday for the 4.10 and I sure notice a different with my normal RPM/MPH for freeway driving as I headed south to Surf City this AM. I kinda took my time coming home ...

Shift points shouldn't have changed but the speed (mph) where they occur will be about 10% lower that with the 3.73. I think overall the driveability should be much improved.

Your PCM is looking at the output shaft speed signal and determining shift points based on the faster rotational speed you now have. Your MPH shift points will be a bit lower with the new gears, but then the trans isn't working as hard either.

This is all correct. When you input the new gear ratio in the software it automaticly converts all the shift point (mph) according to the desired shift (rpm).

So then ... their no need to reprogram the shift points. Thanks to the experts and I'll try the 3rd gear of fun.

Not to confuse the issue, but doesn't the fluid pressure have some effect on the shift point?
