Thread: arrogance or factual statements?

Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by avery09
At times Monk say things which are factual but can be construed as being arrogant; For example, in UFO episode, he told the mechanic he was car smart. I thought it was a statement of fact and not really demeaning. Not everyone is car smart! It is quite a compliment to be car smart, imo.

I don't want to fence with words, but in effect Monk called him dumb/stupid. I don't think a good auto mechanic could be stupid.

I think being car smart is a compliment because many people are not. Monk did not mean it as a compliment but made a factual though insensitive statement. Brilliant people like Monk are too literal.

The inference he made, and the way Monk said it, implied that this was the only way the guy was smart, and that he was stupid otherwise.

Correct. Monk's remarks were demeaning, condescending, negative.

Do you by any chance remember Gomer and Goober? Granted, those were fictional characters, but then again, so are Monk and the mechanic in question. But in real life, I have known great auto mechanics that were pretty dumb when it came to anything else. I know an air conditioning guy who is good enough at what he does that he can put the proper charge of coolant in a system without using ...

Maybe, fine. I don't recall what started this thread. The main thing, though, regarding Monk is that: (1) Monk was mean towards the auto mechanic in the UFO episode. (2) Monk had no basis to refer to the mechanic as basically stupid. Monk was prejudiced. Also, the mechanic could be uneducated in most areas and could be uncouth. He could be lazy. But to own a successful business (I think...

UFO scene was just an example. Other example: When people say to Monk he is the greatest detective on the planet, Monk never says that I am blessed or I got lucky or some such thing which other people say in real life. Monk just accepts it as a factual statement.

Psychology recognizes that there are different types of intelligence; Monk apparently does, too. But there's almost always a price to be paid for being TOO intelligent in one way and not in another. Monk is super-intelligent in his own way, but his social intelligence is abysmal. He probably didn't really mean to insult the mechanic, but he's just so bad at dealing with people sometimes that ...

{{Still pretty bad, but that's what he meant, and to be honest, it's very possible that he would be right in saying so.}} I agree. Monk does not feel blessed that he has a gift. He thinks it is more of a burden.
