Thread: another engine ?

Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by project 67 sub
on my sbc 350 motor that i am building, it originally came with an 8" balancer (don't have it anymore). but when i put a 6"ish balancer for a 77 camaro on it the timing mark on it doesn't match up to the timing pointer when the #1 piston is at top dead center. does it matter if it has a different balancer than what was originally installed on it? if not, can i just buy some of that balancer ...

I used a small triangular file and filed a mark at TDC on one of mine. Probably can mark it with a hacksaw blade or the tape as you mentioned. Once the timing is set, it pretty much stays there and it's not micron critical anyway.

I've recut the mark on the balancer a time or two myself, but you will want to do something with the old mark so you don't get them confused. A little tip, if you do use the timing tape, spray some clear over it after applied. This will help keep it on the balancer.
