Thread: aluminum or plastic fresh water tank?

Started 3 months, 2 weeks ago by charliekeri
My aluminum fresh water holding tank just bit the dust (15 years) and need to replace it. Should I go plastic, or aluminum again? I am not worried about durabilty as much as I am worried about the water tasting funny (with plastic). Anyone experiences? Thanks, Charlie Edited by charliekeri on 14 August 2009 at 9:49pm

my vote is aluminum have the inside of the tank coated when it's made SP Industries in NJ makes custom tanks I have had good service from them.

And I would say plastic. Many production boats use plastic water tanks. Mine does, so did the previous one. No taste problems at all. Remember, the water lines are probably plastic.

I've never heard of a plastic tank failing due to corrosion, so atleast if you go plastic you'll never need to do it again. It'll probably cost less too...I know which way I'd go. I've never owned a boat with an aluminum water tank, only plastic.

I built a 9 gallon epoxy coated (inside and out) plywood water tank about 7 years ago and it's still getting the job done nicely.
