Thread: High glucose levels

Started 3 years, 10 months ago by jessieanddave94
My 6 year old daughter was diagnosed with Type I right after her fifth birthday. Until recently, she has not had any major problems. About 2 weeks ago she developed bronchitis, and was placed on Zithromax for 5 days and Septra for 30 days. The infection seems to have cleared, but she is still taking the Septra ton ensure that she does not develop any other infections. Last week she had a CBC and...

High BG is totally normal and expected on sick days especially when throwing up and/or having loose stools. What you are doing is good. Keep in touch with the endocrin and check for ketones every 2 hrs. If her levels are moderate to high take her to the ER. Do not wait for a call back from the endocrin. Blood in the stools is worrisome. I would tell both her endocrin and PCP about it. Did the ...

Thank you for the input-I expect the levels to be up when she's sick, but right now she's not showing any symptoms of anything-just the high glucose levels. No the hospital did not tell me about the 1800 rule-what is it?

Since she is having loose stools w/ blood in them, it is possible that she has another bug. It would also explain her high BG. You should definitely get her an appt and ask them if you should get a stool sample for analysis. The 1800 rule is a formula to figure out how much 1 unit of insulin will drop her BG level. You add up all insulin, including her Lantus or whichever long-acting insulin ...

Thank you so much for your help-at least now I can try to get her levels down a little better. I'm going to call the doctor now and I'll let you know what I find out.

Okay, so the doctor seems to think this all may have something to do with needing to up her lantus dosage. She started the week at 8u and we are going to 12 tonight, but he wants me to work my way up to 15, which is what she should have according to her weight. Before breakfast this morning, she was at 303mg/dl, she ate 1 slice of toast, 1 egg, and drank half of her milk and none of her fruit. ...

What was her before lunch BG? Did you give her a correction? Did you check her 2 hrs aftr breakfast? If so, what was that number? Does she take her Lantus in the morning or in the evening? I certainly feel that since the endo knows her history, he knows best. If I were you, I would not like jumping her from 8 all the way up to 12, especially in the evening. I don't think we ever jumped Kayla up ...

Well, she finally came down to 95mg/dl before lunch-yippee!! There was no correction given as he wanted to see what would happend without it. Also no check at 2 hours-he wanted it a 1 hour and then at lunch. She takes her lantus at night. The 8 to 12 didn't happen as one big jump-we were at 8 units on sunday night and have added one unit a night since then to bring us to 12 units for tonight. ...

I am glad to help! What an awesome A1C!! Kayla's have been as high as 9% and the lowest was 8%. Since she is on the pump now, her numbers have been awesome. We're hoping for our first 7% A1C at the end of April. You obviously have been doing a good job! Maybe your DD is going through a growth spurt! -- Sarah~~~My kiddos~~~ Chris-6~ Makayla-4 Now an insulin pumper!~ Brilee-2~ Briton-1
