Thread: Your opinions on night sights

Started 1 month, 3 weeks ago by NEOH212
Ok guys, If you would be willing to indulge me for a moment, I would like to get a Police Officers opinion on handgun night sights. You guys are in a position where you are more likely to have to your use your sidearm than I am so I'm sure you guys have thought a lot about this (or not.) How much advantage do they really offer? Thanks to everyone in advance!

I have Trijicon and love them, but I also rarely use sights just point and shoot

Try to imagine a scenario where you have the time to use your night sights. They're there if you ever need them, but IMO most of the time you'll not have the luxury of being able to use your sights.

If you train to acquire the front sight before pressing the trigger then that is what you will revert to under stress. By train I don't mean talk about it or think that you will, I mean hundreds of hours of repetition. I love my TruGlo TFO's for the simple fact that they pick up ambient light from my weaponlight if deployed, and glow with trtium if no other light is available. Great low light ...

I like them. I have them on my Glock 22 and G27. I also have Crimson Trace Laser grips on my Smith 642. I have been retired from the job 21 years now but when I was on we had no night sights.

I would not use them, just remember if you are clearing a dark house or other structure you are a "glowing beacon" for whoever is laying in wait. That's just my opinion, yes it would be hard to acquire the front sight but imagine doing so under high stress of being killed or in a gun fight. You mostly likely will be point shooting and not immediately focusing on your front sight anyway. ...

Wouldn't have a defensive gun without them.

Turn your gun around. You're holding it the wrong way. That hole you're facing is where the bullets come out. Seriously...

SPDSNYPR, I respect your opinion but that is mine and that is what I was taught. If you can use your sights in a close gun battle and win....that's great! I can point shoot and hit the 10 ring at 15 yards without even using a front sight. I prefer not to carry night sights on duty but if it happens I don't see it being that big of a deal as you've pointed out some other good points as...

silverado mick, I never meant to say or imply that you are reckless discharging your duties, if it came off like that I apologize. I understand the point you are trying to make and there is no question having a light mounted on your firearm frees up the other to do other things. If I had to holster my gun or the flashlight it's going to be the flashlight. I also don't point my gun at anything I'm not willing to shoot but the...

Come on, everybody, stop picking on G-man. He's allowed to have his opinions, no matter how wrong they are. Hey, just like everything in this world, what works for you doesn't necessarily work for everyone else. If you feel night sights are a valuable investment (as I do), great, there are tons of great options out there. If you don't, the good news is that most pistols come from the factory without them, and the lack of tritium...

Sorry if I was obtuse with my first respose. night sights and a white light, either on the gun or in your hand with training to use it, are mandatory. you can't shoot something you can't see. you can't go before a court and explain what you were shooting if you couldn't see it and articulate why it was a threat.

Well guys, all that I can say is WOW! I figured that I might get a few replies but you really out did yourselves! There is so much great information here! My question has been answered, and as from what I have read here, I don't feel odd having night sights on all of my handguns. I had a gentleman at the range call me an idiot for spending all of that money on those useless glow in the dark sights. He called me a mall ninja! (now I...
