Coin is lustrous all the way around. I couldn't catch it with my camera though.

I'm going to try to get some more pics. It's a shame that my camera or my photography wants to pick up and accentuate every tiny little scratch. The coin really doesn't appear that badly with the naked eye.

I might point out that despite this, it is a tougher date/mm combo to find and would fill a slot nicely in a set for someone who doesn't have the $1200 or more for an uncirculated piece. AU bid in greysheet for an 04-S is a respectable $450....the downshot in XF is $165. I'd guesstimate that with the cleaning, this would sell here somewhere in the $200-300 range. FWIW.

It doesn't appear to have much luster. Maybe a little between the lettering. I'd tend to think that it has been harshly cleaned. Also, the brown spot, on the reverse, looks like dip residue. I believe it's spent some time in the Tarn-X tub. The 1904-S is usually found with weak details, so your coin probaby didn't circulate, even though the high points are flat. I can't be sure,...

Well, here's the best I can do for now. I need alot of practice. Also, I am 100% certain that this coin has never been cleaned.

Hi Jody...if you're out there...here are the pics I promised. Took a little bit of digging around. First, my great grandparents, second..my grandparents, third...my great grandfather at the General Store. I've so far traced back to 1682 Germany and am not even close to done. My great, great, great etc grandfather was a Captain in the War of 1812. Pretty neat

Next time you see JA, ask him if he's bought any coins sight unseen lately for his clients. If I can remember. Spectrum was at the last show and I meant to ask about the cemented coins but forgot.

I thought I had. NO, you haven’t, glocmt12. When the TPGs’ grading standards become “loose” such that strictly graded MS-65s, for example, are now accurately graded MS-66s, what real value is there in CAC’s “opinion”? If market grading standards change (for whatever reason), what value is there in CAC’s “opinion”? It is a wide known fact that grading standards at the TPGs have changed over time and they fluctuate. Your...

Which is quicker to sell.........an overgraded encapsulated coin or one that is graded properly with a CAC sticker on it? A VG10 coin with a sticker on it is more appealing to me than an obviously overgraded VG10 in a F12 or F15 slab. I've seen a fair share of overgraded material sit in dealer stock for a while. It just doesn't move.

For anyone who is interested, and I doubt anyone is, go to the NGC website and check out their grading system for ancient coins for an example of a TPG capturing more than one parameter about a coin. Please excuse this interruption. Fell free to continue the entrenched battle now.

The weakness he saw was in third party grading. Namely, what is on the label does not always accurately represent what is inside the plastic. Oh wait, he was a founder of both PCGS and NGC. Next time you see JA, ask him if he's bought any coins sight unseen lately for his clients.

" If and when you know as much about your field as he knows about his you will be entitled to an opinion. " Oh, I'm entitled to an opinion, good buddy. And make no mistake. I'll express it at my own pleasure. Deal with it. " You are an expert in Dansco albums, I believe. " News to me. Grasping at straws, are you?

I believe that Omega's antics preceded PCGS and NGC, though. My memory of exactly who got fooled by those before they were discovered may be a little fuzzy. But you get my point.
