Thread: Worried about installing 18 x 18 porcelain

Started 2 months ago by MaryAnnKacz
Have done a few smaller tile jobs with 6 and 12 inch tile. Want to tile living room that has radiant heat floor. Room is 18 x 19. Would love to use 18 inch tiles, think it looks much better with less grout lines. I know I can do a great job using 12 x 12, but not so sure with larger format. Slab is about 7 years old. There is carpet down now, but from what I remember, slab is very level and...

Hi MaryAnn, The biggest problem I think you'll run into is prep work on that slab. Any tile installation is only as good (and flat) as what lies beneath. If you take your time and make certain your slab is as flat as you can get it and take your time while installing the tile you should be fine. You may want to consider a decoupling membrane for it such as Ditra. I would use a medium bed ...

Welcome to the forum. Is your heat in the slab? Also, any control joints under the carpet to deal with? The medium bed mortar will be great for the large format tile. I still use the same trowel for 18x18 as I do for 12x12. Only difference is I spread thinset on the floor and instead of skimming the back of the tile with the flat side, I spread with the notches on the back of ...

Yes, heat is in slab. I think tile will be more economical for heating. Heat will radiate better than with carpet and pad. There are no control joints. But, who knows what I will find when I take up carpet. Last time I saw the slab was about 2 months after it was done, its an addition to house. Hopefully, no cracks. What is the best way to check floor for flatness?

I use an eight foot straight edge. That will give you a pretty good feel for what kind of shape your floor is in.

I did our kitchen in 18s... My only regret was not leveling it first. I was in a hurry and thought i would just level as I went. Big mistake! I will never do that again, but do have to say, the floor came out very level. I can lay my 6 foot level across and its nearly perfect. Just took my time and used a 6", 24", and 6' level. I kinda screwed up the grout also trying to rush... But I can not ...

What kind of mortar did you guys use for the 18 inch and 20 inch tile?

A medium bed mortar will make it easier to get, and keep those tiles where you want them. A few options depending on availability- Laticrete 220 Laticrete 255 Customs Marble & Granite Mapei Ultracontact Mapei Ultralite
