Hi, I live in a little community were about 10 of my neighbors have discussed sharing a wireless internet connection. What we would like to do is set up a wireless AP for the purpose of shared internet access only. Each neighbor could connect to the shared wireless AP through their own(and already set up LAN). We only need to figure out if this is possible and what AP we need and other devices...

most routers have specific methods for setting up an access point. these methods vary between models and brands. you may need a wireless network repeater within your home to re-amplify the signal, if it is from a few houses away.
it would be expensive, but more reliable if you got some outdoor equipment like from Tranzeo or Motorola. Get an access point and a few CPE units (client)... the best option would really be judged by the physical position of each house, obstructions between those houses, etc.
you can buy extended antennaes that pick up wifi signals, i dont know the website but i've seen stats showing the wireless connection from a mile away!!!!!!!!!!!! google wifi antennaes, idk if they sell in u.s.a
Mark Explosion!: more reliable if you got some outdoor equipment like from Tranzeo or Motorola. motorola is good but if you think tranzeo is not absolute trash then you have not used anything good before. i have used them a few times and that stuff sucks. causes the most problems on any network they are on. now to answer the OP. to do this well the cost may be much more than what you ...
WOW, you all really know your stuff. Thank you for all the responses so far. The complex is set up in a U shape, so from center (outside) it is only about 80 - 100 feet from each apartment. I think outdoor equipment would be better. We have a budget of a few hundred to maybe one thousand dollars. So we will not be able to set up the elaborate network mentioned above (sounds awesome though). ...

Mikrotik is good! I strongly would not recommend running wireless client's for each user as there is already pre cabled system in place as it will also reduce the cost factor! Id suggest use a Mikrotik Router Board and use it's built in PPPoE/radius server, problem solved!
Ozzie Wan Kenobi : Dino: Mikrotik is good! mikrotik and microtek are 2 different companies. now i have used the mikrotik software, 'the dude'. love it too. Mikrotik has it's restriction's, and there Debian distribution is half-closed + licensing fees. I also reckon Tranzos are just dumb bridges! (lol) On the other hand, Ubiquiti networks rock's. Gives canopy a run for it's ...
Thanks all for the input so far; I will try to provide more specifics for discussion. I need to know if the following set up will work; I am only providing general specifics (not brand names and specific equipment as I have not purchased it yet)? Here is the proposed set up - Cable Modem, to (high end) wireless AP/Router, to wireless client/s (standalone) network adapter/s (like Airport ...
Anthony: I'm a little confused, but if they were having their own LAN but sharing wifi together would not that kill and tear up bandwidth of the connection? I would think for the main modem that gets all the signals you would need fiber optic cable to keep that speed and anything less then high speed DSL would keep them slow. Security would be an issue too. But i could see it working. yeah, for sure. Fiber links are the go. If your only...
Ok great. Now I am making sense of this all. I am not that experienced with wireless networks and I am a little amazed at just how complicated a few radio waves can be. If I were to purchase indoor equipment that had the capability of allowing a separate antenna to be attached, I could place the antenna outside instead of the AP. I am not sure if it is just the capabilities of the set up I have described or if it is the outdoor equipment that...

Dino: The information given above is not 100% correct! Best bet is to get in touch with some local wifi community's. for example; http://www.seattlewireless.net http://melbourne.wireless.org.au http://www.air-stream.org.au I'm not here for free advise, sorry. Then, great, thanks for the links, but your missing the point of a forum.
