Thread: Winter Sowing Delphiniums

Started 8 months, 2 weeks ago by quilt_mommy
After reading Kiddo's post and answers, which were very inspiring and helpful, I am wondering if I may have made a mistake in sowing my delphiniums in a flat with echinacea. I put them out in full sun for germination - I should have read the packet closer! Should I move them to dappled shade after they are done germinating? I have about a dozen sprouts and am wondering if they haven't yet all ...

I had one container germinate out of 3. They were purchased from Park seed. The two traded containers haven't done squat. This fall, I'll direct sow them because other in the cottage garden forum say that's the best method for my zone.

Hmm. I guess I will have to see what happens with mine. I have two lasagna flats of them that have germinated, but not very densly. I sure hope they make it!

I traded for a mix, no idea whether they are comm. or home collected. They seem to be coming up quite nicely and look pretty thick. I'm hopeful. I've never done them before.

Last November I ordered 3 packets of Delphinium seeds from Dowdeswell's in NZ. They included a free packet of mixed colors, so I decided to sow 2 packets immediately and hold the other 2 in the fridge until January -- just to see what would happen. We had a warm spell in December, and the 2 jugs that had been sown decided that it was time to germinate. I panicked and moved them onto an ...

I grew my first Delphinium plants two summers ago and fell in love with them so I ordered seeds from Dowdeswell's so I could have more of them. One of the reasons I ordered seeds was so I could have exactly the kinds of Delphiniums I wanted. I received the seeds a month or so ago and I have them in my refrigerator per their instructions. Since I have never grown many things from seed, and ...

Dodswell's is a true friend of WinterSown! They are completely supportive of the Winter Sowing Method being used for germinating delphinium seeds. Here is a link that might be useful: Dodswell's + WinterSown (((((HUG)))))

I did Delphiniums my very first year of w/s. I planted my jugs in February and set them out into the snow. They did really good. They are taller than I can reach up. The next year I tried starting them in the greenhouse and all of the little seedlings died. I then tried starting some on the picnic table in cell packs. Nothing. I winter sowed another batch this February and they did great and they...

OK the last line of their FAQ on how to grow delphs at home is : Always buy your seed from a trusted source and always, but always, store it in the fridge. Delphinium seed goes off very quickly at room temperature. Really?

I just started gardening and everything is coming together nicely! Except for my Pacific Giants Mixed colors Delphinium. I was so excited and I was anticipating their growth that I didn't refrigerate my seeds 2-3 weeks before sowing.:( They should have started germinating today but no such luck. I've been digging through and I only see seeds. I don't have anymore delphinium seeds to plant. Whats the next step? Is there any way...

I don't know what you should do in your 8b zone. Perhaps someone in a warmer zone will have some advice. I have had good results winter sowing delphiniums. I put them out in March and have sprouts the end of April or early May. The 'Redcap' delphiniums I ws this year did not germinate well so left the seeds in the 2L hoping for further germination. Nothing all spring/summer. Decided to dump the container during clean up and lo...
