Thread: Windows XP will not start

Started 1 month, 3 weeks ago by sspingvin
Keeps coming back to the 5 option screen ( Safe mode, SM w/ networking, SM w/ command prompt, Last Known Good Config or Start Windows normally) None of those options work. Intel P4, 1,8 GHz, newish HD with lots of space. Looked at the F1- BIOS setup utility, and F12- Intel boot agent but can't see any obvious thing to do.

Try this first. Unplug all USB things and try again. Next? Research XP REPAIR INSTALL since some malware can be fixed with that. Good luck, Bob

This might sound like whining but how do I duplicate the XP CD? I used the CD that came with the computer. Duplicating it (and I don't know how to do that...make a copy somehow??) seems like it would just as easily introduce another layer of errors. Put in a new CD drive..???..don't understand the logic, a fault with the unit I guess you are suggesting. This computer is 7+ years old....

This tip has been shared in the forums many times. Don't make me look it up. Well, just for you read http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6142_102-0.html?thread ID=154987 They duplicated the CD and it worked. Bob

Reinstalled XP (second time); got 2 copy errors, kept requesting a retry until they didn't reappear; don't know exactly how that worked out but I am on the internet with Firefox. So that's good news. But Internet Explorer (same error msg)still doesn't work, Windows Media Player doesn't work ("An internal appl error has occured"-msg). I suspect other MS application or tools don't ...

But those items not working can be a sign of a bad install plan. It's up to you to share all the install steps. I've lost count on where people install Windows but forget the motherboard or other drivers.

This is a Gateway 700SE, it came with 1 XP disc, 2 Applications discs, 1 Drivers disc and a Soundblaster disc. I only used the XP disc- the booklet on using the restoration discs says- "If you just reinstalled Windows, the device drivers were automatically installed." There were no on-screen prompts to put in any of the other discs. So, I guess there's more to do...

I'd keep going.

I will admit that at this point I'm pretty well lost. What do I do next?: 1) reinstall the drivers, 2) reinstall the drivers and the 2 applications discs...? Do I load a disc with the computer on or restart the computer with the disc in like the reinstall of XP?

R. Proffitt replied 1 month, 2 weeks ago
I could pick and choose the apps.

Why? XP does appear to start. Now you are writing about failures in APPLICATIONS which is not the topic under discussion.
