Thread: Win7 64 bit question

Started 4 months ago by NY2NV
Since the Win7 upgrade DVD will have both the 32 and 64 bit version, will you be able to upgrade from Vista 32 to Win 64 bit as a clean install?

Last night I tried a test and installed Win7 RC 64bit version, to see if there would be any driver issues. I turned on all my printers (3) one older HP Laser and my Epson scanner. Win7 recognised all the hardware, the scanner works with a Vista 64 bit driver. Currently running a triple boot. Found this on a MS Win7 site: "If you want to move from a 32-bit version of Windows to a 64-bit ...

Windows 7 32bit and 64bit are included in the same package for one price, If you want to upgrade from 32bit to 64bit you will need to perform a clean install.

Thanks for the heads up. I wasn't sure if you had to pay more for the 64bit move. I did the 64bit RC install to see if there were driver issues with some of my older hardware, so far none. I wanted to take advantage of additional ram support. Thanks again for the fast reply.

Vista 64bit updates will work for the tuner card as well as for other hardwares. For the tuner card's application right click on the main executable and open up the compatibility tab to set that to run in Vista mode there as well as run as admin. That will help solve any problems that come up. The retail upgrade disk as well as the full version will have both 32bit and 64bit dvds included ...

Zdon replied 4 months ago
Nope, not the Tuner. It won't run on 64-bit anything.

Have you checked the manufacturer's support site to see if they have any Vista64 updates? If not you are in the same boat I was in when buying a Pinnacle tv tuner card that only ran on XP but was their latest model sold! When going back to the first brand where the card gave out and buying a replacement with the same model the company by then had finally seen a set of Vista updates ...

The tuner card I have is the WinTV-PVR-250 (Hauppauge WinTV PVR PCI) works great with Windows Media Center in Win7 64bit. Win7 cable guide and dvr features work better in Win7. I am a very happy camper. This PC is an HP Pavilion a1477c, I added a better supply, video card. Has worked great with Vista since day one.

That's good news if you already have 64bit support for Vista available over some cards without anything. Zdon is kind of stuck there like I was with the replacement I tried out here some time back. After 2 full years still no Vista updates with 7 on the way shortly for the rest of us without MSDN or Technet subscriptions. Once you get into the retail 7 you'll enjoy even more there ...
