Thread: Wife is eyeing a Springfield Armory EMP 9mm. Good choice?

Started 4 months, 1 week ago by slowrey
My wife and I went to the gun store this weekend. She's going to be getting her CHL soon. I made sure that she handled all of the guns in her size without looking at brand names or price tags. Well she likes the SA EMP 9mm and she likes the feel of my P7M8. Any suggestions of any other's? I hate to spend $1100 for the EMP when the P7M8's are so close in price. Sean

My wife really likes her EMP. We changed out the sights (Novak wide notch rear and large fiber optic front) and ambi safety though.

One thing you have to ask, is is she comfortable with a manual safety on the EMP? It will take time and training in order to get that to a habit to learn to work the safety both off and on. EMP's are great guns, but I assume since she's getting her CHL, she's probably a fairly new shooter. I would recommend an HK P2000 with the LEM in 9mm. Give it a shot, and ask the counter man to grab the case...

I love my EMP in 9mm ... its a great little gun, and surprisingly, very accurate as well. I concur with jjkroll32 ... as with any new piece, significant trigger time is called for if you're not accustomed to the platform. That said, the EMP is a solid "mini-1911," I always smile when I shoot mine! -BK

You could NOT buy my EMP!! What a great CCW, if you like the 1911 platform.

Well during the holding of the guns, she didn't really like the guns without manual safeties. The only gun she's shot and owns is the Walther P22 and she's used to the safety on it. She did like my P2000 when I owned it however it was kinda bulky however I had the .40 variant of it. Her brother just bought a P2000SK 9mm which she loved until she picked up the EMP. Now that she's been ...

The EMP is the benchmark for a compact 9mm 1911 and is a spectacular pistol. That said, carrying a SAO pistol requires a great deal of training for muscle memory and if she's not going to do it then I recommend a simpler trigger system in a similarly small package size such as the Kahr P9, Kahr PM9 or Walther PPS.

The EMP is, in my opinion, an excellent pistol. I try to shoot it in two action pistol matches a month at the DPC. As with most pistols I shoot, the pistol is more accurate than the person doing the shooting. I recommend it.

I shot one at a range and really liked it. Though I already owned a Kahr MK9 and didn't think it was worth making a switch - especially considering the premium price the EMP commanded (and I'd guess still commands).

When I had my wife out to buy her first pistol, I had looked around and was convinced she would love the EMP. We looked at Walthers in .40 and 9mm, Sigs P239 in .40 SW, and then the the EMP. She surprised me in deciding on the Sig.Since buying it, I had to have a P226 SCT for myself.
