Thread: Why weren't people pissed off at Superman when he came back?
Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by Timstuff
Superman left Earth for 5 years, and think about all the people he could have saved during that time but chose not to. Lois Lane wrote an editorial on why the world didn't need Superman, and oddly enough we never hear what the thesis of it was. It won a Pulitzer prize though, which seems to suggest that people had grown to resent Superman in his absence. You'd expect that when Superman returns to...
Why should they be angry with him? Even if he was still about, he can't save everyone. People take Superman for granted too much. Suppose he actually existed and your kid got knocked over by a car. Would your first thought be "Damn that Superman, where was he when I needed him?".
He completely stopped saving anyone though, for 5 years. Lois Lane was able to win a Pulitzer Prize by writing an article about why the world doesn't need Superman, which implies that people had grown to resent him for leaving. If the world was getting on just fine without him, then it means that the world really didn't need Superman. If the world was suffering a lot more without Superman, then ...
Well don't forget, at the moment, all they could think about is the airplane that was about to come crashing down on them. As well, after 5 years, Superman wasn't really on anyone's mind just before he returned.
But there is something you are forgetting as well in regards to 9/11 and other incidences that some claim that Superman could have prevented.
It wasn't Superman's absence that flew...
If Superman knew that Al-Qaeda was going to murder 6000 people on 9/11, would he have left? If Superman knew that the Boxing Day tsunami was going to kill more than 300,000 people, would he have left?
The answer to both is NO.
But did he know it was a possibility?
The answer to that is YES.
Besides (and I can't believe Perunu missed this one) nobody can prove either of those ...
yes it is a bit unrealistic, but this is FICTION. Do we know how much time passed between when he saved the plane and had that conversation/flight with Lois? He got back to patrolling the city almost right away, and then after Lois told him off he went on a spree saving people and stopping bad guys world wide.
The public would have been stupid to say "no thanks now go away" to him at that ...
Get pissed off at a god? Your savior? His absence reminded people of how much they missed him. Regardless, he can't stop every catashophe. Superman (a basic metaphor for Jesus) showed them the "light" its up for mankind to think for themselves and use his example. Rememeber what Jorel said?
Also Supes has a right to come and go as he pleases. He's not bound to earth. Its not his REAL haritage....
And I think Lois winning the Prize for the article is because it was a nice piece of writing/journalism, rather than a reflection of actual public opinion. Lois was just being rewarded for writing what might be considered an interesting academic study.
