Thread: Why mount a GPS on a bike when it's already in phones?

Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by TalkingRain
Technology continues to moves very fast. Early on, it made sense to spend hundreds of dollars to purchase the add on GPS units because that was the only game in town if you wanted or needed GPS features on a bike. But times have changed and at this point I just don't see why someone would need or want to invest so much money when the same accuracy and tools can now be found using an iPhone or ...

very good points... My GPS links to my phone via BT, and plays MP3s. 1) You may not know this, but the keeping your phone in the GPS mode sucks battery life very quickly. I have a Palm Pre and have the option of carrying extra batteries and or installing an extended life battery if I choose. The iPhone folks are stuck w/the internal battery. 2)So now you will need some way of charging your ...

Glad to see a few are awake... Now let me slap you all with a one shot response. All of today's GPS equipped phones are using the same technology as the stand alone GPS. Phones are just as accurate. Battery life is very good in most phones but if we're comparing apples to apples (lol), plugging a phone into a charger removes the battery life issue. Updates, who wants to deal with updates? I ...

I have used the GPS on my blackberry. Now I am not able to look at my it while riding...so I just entered the address of my destination, put it in my jacket and used earbuds to listen to the directions.

Why not use the sucker that came with the GPS and "sucker" it to the speedo glass! They all will display current speed. I've yet to use my GPS on the bike, I prefer to get lost some when out for a ride. Find new roads etc. I would agree most of the mounts look like they came from the tractor store.

When on my bike i dont need a map. Just go where that front tire takes me

I got one reason I use a GPS and not keep up with technology. Because I already have the GPS.

We all need to realize that there are Nerds out there. I was having this conversation with Pascal a few weeks ago, we ride basically the same canyons every weekend. Different roads here and there but we have done them so many times that we now sometimes do them in reverse to mix it up a bit. I haven't used my GPS on the bike since the big group ride to big bear lake a bunch of weeks ago, it's far and I was leading so I needed to know...

Also on very curvy roads, being able to look down ata GPS screen gives you an idea of what is coming up.

So what happens when the phone you are using for navigation slips out of its arm-band holder and goes bouncing down the pavement? 1. You realize it instantly, turn around and find the phone and it still functions. 2. You realize it instantly, turn around and find the phone and it's broken. 3. You realize it instantly, turn around but cannot find the phone anywhere. 4. You don't realize it's gone until you look at it again, have...

I would not mind having a gps on my bike. i have one for the car and it works great for vacations with thousands of points of interest. If i want mex food just punch it in and tells me what my choices are and their phone numbers.
