A 9lb 2oz baby just got admitted to the NICU and I can't stop staring at her because I can't believe that a freshly hatched baby could be that huge. It probably doesn't help my perspective that her crib is right next to Elliot's, but I know there were one or two people here who delivered a baby that big vaginally (hi Nassau!), which is unbelievable to me!
Not sure (they're really strict about privacy), but I saw them using a glucometer on her so maybe low blood sugar issues? She also had an IV in her arm.
That was my DD's size! And I delivered her without a csection! OUCH!++ they actually did take several blood tests for DD right after she was born to keep checking her blood sugar, in case they had missed GD. But interestingly enough, my 2nd baby, also full term, weighed just over 6 pounds. We don't know why, but I had a subchorionic hematoma in my uterus with this pregnancy and was on ...
DD1 was 9 lbs, but no NICU. When DS (8-1) was in the NICU he looked gigantic r/o compared to the preemies in there, so I can imagine how huge a 9-pounder would seem! Even though I had GD with both pregnancies, it was strictly controlled so my postprandial sugars never got over 120 and my fasting sugars never got over 90. My babies were just big (and long) b/c I'm 5'11" and DH is 6'4".
okay, but 5'10" is exactly average for men... are you suggesting that controlled GD r/o results in huge babies? I ask because my OB and endocrinologist were both emphatic that it's *uncontrolled* GD that can raise the baby's weight. Please note that just as you might be sensitive to suggestions that you must have done something wrong to end up with babies in the NICU, women who develop GD are sensitive to suggestions,...
