It seems like everybody's got widgets these days; OS X (I think), Windows 7, Opera and KDE 4! How come Gnome does not?
It's not like their panel apps are the same or as advanced as these widgets. They help, but it still seem to lack in functionality in comparison.
Widgets have more functionality? Really? Whenever a widget tries to do anything even slightly complicated, it quickly becomes apparent, at least to me, that they shouldn't have. To me they're just eye candy.
Try searching for Screenlets or gDesklets.
Just FYI, while Apple didn't invent widgets, I'm pretty sure they were the first desktop to have them.
gDesklets don't seem to be working for me, at least in F12 beta. I installed the 'nice weather' one and it's not working, or I didn't do something right. I'll check out screenlets.
Puppy Linux has some nice widgets, I like the clock one. Then again, I guess they don't use gnome, do they? hmmmm
Edit: I just got gdesklets working (I decided to read the help, duh...). You have to double-click ...
Go to KDE. I didn't keep in touch with Gnome, when I started using Fedora 10, it was Gnome's turn to revamp. KDE spent along time revamping, its working now.
Did Gnome revamp already?

I think Gnome 3 is coming out next October (2010).
Google Gadgets are great! To install Google Gadgets from the repository on Fedora 10 or higher, do this:
yum install google-gadgets-gtk
I use them myself, really great! You get a ton of widgets, an easy browser, and a widget maker kit. Hope you like them.
I'm not a fan of widgets, so not having them in Gnome is no loss for me. I've used them in both OSX and windows and more often then not, they tend to get in the way for me.
as i rarely have a view of my desktop wallpaper, i find widgets useless, i've even stopped using conky or gkrellm, i always found screenlets/desklets completely useless and there just for bling (in true osx/vista style).
anything i need goes in the panel.

No, they weren't. NeXTSTEP had them before Apple bought NeXT. Also, WindowMaker (on Linux) had widgets before Apple did, as early as 1997. Not surprising, since WindowMaker tries ...

Also, while technically they may have been widgets, they certainly weren't what we think of today when we hear/say widget, which is...

b4 IBM gave birth to Microsoft [...] there was Amiga ! All that gadgets / widgets / whatever was born on Amiga. We practically made the hole desktop by using these >>useful<< things. In fact, it was better than anything today .... Even MAC dident have anything like that, back then. Today its just eye-candy and no real useful thing to waste resources on. And still far behind the power they gave Amiga, for more than...
