Thread: "Why do we tip?" No, why don't we tip?!? - Yahoo! Answers

The question is why the heck don't you tip. Anyone who doesn't realize that most servers make only $2.13/hour and live almost solely on tips is an ignorant, uncultured creep. I'm not trying to be mean or anything but seriously try to become culturally relevant before going out in public. And honestly, it's not a bonus, it's a living. So many people just don't tip. You know what's worse? Some ...
I agree completely. So many people are completely ignorant of the fact that servers are paid next to nothing, usually a little over 2 dollars. Tips are what servers live off of, and I don't believe anything less than 15% is acceptable unless the service was bad. And by bad service I don't mean how long it takes the food to cook, or how long it takes to get seated when its busy. Those things are ...
Most of the people here are good people who know how to tip. Please don't let the other idiots get to you. Also, keep in mind, this forum is international, and the USA is the only tipping country (pretty much). There's one chick here, Anchors Aweigh, who believes tipping is 10%, and its a "gift" (she copies & pastes the definition often).

Thank you for addressing this. I tip out 3% on my sales. I hate when teenagers come in, its the worst. People just lack the ability to be generous. 80% of the people who go out to eat are nice, normal people just looking for something to eat and the other 20% are socially maladjusted psychopaths. I also hate how people think 5$ is such a standard tip...how annoying is it when people tip 5 ...

yeah, i make 2.83 an hour...that because ive been serving for a longgg time and threatened to quit...but anyway...i tip out 3% of my total sales and at the end of the night i have to claim 8% of everything! so yeah, if a bill is 100$, and i get screwed, i still have to claim that i made like, 8 bucks from that table.

Hey you got right! I've done this (or have ) for 30 year's. When ppl come into my place of buisness,we are expected to treat them as our guest's in our (house) . You're not ranting, just speaking your peace and glad you are! it's a life-long thing.I take it you're a good server, otherwise you would'nt say anything. Most of the sluff's just ***** and go away. If you can't afford to tip, go away....
Its a hard job & if the server is attentive, you bet I'll tip!
However if the server eventually shows up to take our order, then eventually unapolgetically comes to deliver it after it takes an unreasonable amount of time (i.e. over 15 minutes); is difficult to flag down to get a drink refill or the check, I'll be less inclined to tip. Mind you, I'm not talking a situation where the place is...
just because there are not alot of tables in the restaurant doesnt mean your server isnt busy. there could be only one or two servers there at that time, and they could have every table at the restaurant. and if your meal takes too long, thats usually the kitchen staffs fault not the servers. people never understand until they try working the job themselves.
I love when people justify their shitty tipping practices by what I call the "rule of two different restaurants." This means that they are too stupid to figure out why tipping is based on a percentage of your check versus a set amount that you tip no matter where you go. The truth is that tipping is based on a percentage for two reasons:
1. The more drinks or food you order the more work ...
Ha man I feel you! Been doing this for almost 10 years. People are stupid and ignorant. Even most of the good tippers in this world don't know we don't make the standard minimum wage. And for those retards that say "thats not legal" read this:

Why should I go into a restaurant and pay the staffs wages? I go into purchase food not take on the responsibility of the management. I would not expect the manager of a restaurant to come to my company and start to pay my staff !! The fault is totally with the staff, if you did the un American thing and came out on strike and provided a picket line to prevent scabs going in then he would soon be out of business. Nobody is decrying waiting...

I think that you should tip. However, I think you're being a little unfair. Yes, some teenagers don't tip, but that's not true with everyone. Some people can barley afford to eat out, so they don't have extra money for a tip. I think it's unfair, however, that waiters/waitresses get paid less because of tips. I follow the 15% rule and add more if the service was good. (Some phones, like Verizon,...

What these ignorant anti-tippers need to do is have the courtesy to inform the server that they will not tip. This would teach these ingrate customers the true value of a server as the sever will not bust butt to fill every whim at that table. See how they like waiting 15 minutes for a refill.
