Thread: Why do we let Americans destroy our history?

Alexander is just one example of all "epic" Hollywood films where European governments and people, in this case Greece, let American directors and writers to twist and play with their history. Films like Troy, Kingdom of heaven, Highlander, King Arthur and Apocalypto are all films that describe historical events which America has absolutely no relation to. I think it´s time for the Europeans to ...
As a fellow European (well...British with West African heritage), I whole-heartedly disagree.
What's more, I would love to see this French film made about a gay George Bush (provided they explain that they either have strong evidence to back it up or just plain made it up).
It's only a movie - no need to start rising up against Hollywood just yet.
American?
How many of these films have international casts and crew, as well as the directors of many of them?
And by the way, Americans have as much relation to these subjects as any European, as they are descended, the vast majority anyway, from Europeans. Just because one's family didn't migrate from, say, the British Isles, doesn't mean those folks have any more "real" connection to ...
"How would Americans react if for example France made a film where George Washington is described as gay."
You sound like those silly Greek lawyers a few years ago who threatened to sue the makers of the film because they suggested Alexander was gay.
Apart from the fact that the lawsuit would have failed, it was silly because we can't prove or disprove the sexuality of someone who lived ...
" Whether one likes it or not (and this includes Americans themselves who want to distance themselves from Europe), a vast part of the American heritage is European. "
So written history didn't start in 1776?
"Both sides are entitled to their point of view about Alexander's orientation as long as everyone realizes that it is a matter of interpretation and opinion."
Except when an interpretation insults an entire country!
Then every son of Troy will DIE!!!
If you know something is untrue, you can't be insulted by it. It's only when you suspect it might be true that it can bother you. And any country whose history can be "destroyed" by an inaccurate movie--no matter whom it was made by--probably isn't long for this world.
"The value of an idea has nothing to do with the honesty of the man expressing it."--Oscar Wilde
this is the stupidest message ever there is nothing wrong with americans making films about other countrys history. other countrys do make movies about us too. and we don't complain.
Its not your *beep* business on who my heroes are, if he was bi or not its not important, we can forget that aspect. Then every son of Troy will DIE!!!
"let the Greeks make their own version"? What the hell has ever stopped them? Is there a U.N. Resolution barring Greece from making such a film? There's been a couple of Indian films about him and 2 from from Westerners...in 1956 and then in 2004. There was plenty of time for Greece to make an ATG film...nearly 50 years between the Rossen film and Stone's film. Expect typos! Blonde, dyslexic and frankly I don't...
First of all, there's nothing insulting about being gay. Second of all, it's a well known fact that Greeks had a lot more homosexual experiences than most cultures. Why does the sexuality of a single Greek (actually Macedonian) make any difference? Ancient Greece was still a very gay place, and if you hate gays then you shouldn't be proud of Greek culture!
I don't care what story is told. Every movie based on a true story is simply BASED UPON and not completely accurate. There is tweaking that's always needed to make the movie watchable, as real life can be dull between actions. We make movies today that are not based on our reality so I think there is some room for creativity... but if a filmmaker is going to do that... just don't call it historically accurate. If you expect a...
"Except when an interpretation insults an entire country!" Why would you find it insulting? Why would it be insulting that someone might be gay?
Normally I would agree with you, but Oliver Stone is a special case where he picks politically charged movies, or historical movies. But take JFK for example, he paints a massive conspiracy behind the murder of the President. Then at the end of the film points out that all records regarding the case files of the assassination will be unlocked in 2012 I think it was? Trying to pawn off that the conspiracy was real. Naw Oliver Stone is just a...
Hi oakar_olin, sorry to disappoint you, but homosexual relations in Ancient Greek and Rome were accepted as something normal. It's from the Middle Ages, under the influence of Roman Catholic Religion, that this kind of practice got associated with sin and unacceptable behavior. For the Ancients, who had different moral ethics, it was not a sin. It was also very common to have adolescent boy-middle-aged man relationships, and this kind of...
