Thread: Who's YOUR favorite horror film star ?

Started 2 months, 3 weeks ago by FanOfHorror
For me, it's easy; it's the Man of a Thousand Faces, Mr. Lon Chaney Sr. Not only was his self make up amazing, he put himself thru so much, including a lot of pain(Hunchback, etc.) to portray whatever character he was in for the film, but he was able to make you feel sorry for him, angry at him, or indifferent, & he did it all without dialogue. And because of his brilliance, I always felt ...

Lon Chaney is in a class all by himself. Nearest runner up- Karloff. Next - Cushing and Price. Shout out - Barbara Steele.

Karloff, without the shadow of a doubt. Next: Peter Cushing, Tod Slaughter.

todmichel, you're an Anglophile! Who would have guessed? (Or more likely, you're just a man of taste. Errr...and a Tod Slaughter fan.)

FanOfHorror replied 2 months, 3 weeks ago
Poelzig2, I forgot about the wonderful Barbara Steele ! And todmichel, the name tod slaughter rings a bell, but am drawing blanks on it ! And to Ladystryke, I may know Bruce Campbell when I see him, but not by name - will be checking Google later - thanks to you all ! But to the other 55 who viewed this, none of you have a favorite horror film star ? Surely you must !

If I had to chose I'd say Christopher Lee is my personal favorite but he only slightly edges out Peter Cushing, Bela Lugosi, Lon Chaney Sr. and Boris Karloff. I love them all though. I really do.

Dn't let Michael Blake hear anyone call Lon Chaney Sr. a "horror star!" (By the way, he's my favorite too!) (By the way 2: I just ordered the Todd Slaughter box from Alpha, so I'll finally be able to sample the work of this legendary actor!)

I would admire Karloff the most. He gets my vote. Among the women, I will cast my vote for Allison Hayes, although Barbara Steele was much more important to the genre. Hazel Court and Joan Collins were gorgeous and capable but never got that one showcase role.

Jeez, no votes for Vinnie. I'll have to pick Vinnie.

<<Don't let Michael Blake hear anyone call Lon Chaney Sr. a "horror star!"<< Don't let Michael Blake hear anyone call him "Lon Chaney SR." Lon's son was named Creighton, so the old man's name was nnnnever Lon Chaney Sr. until "film historians" started calling him that as a lazy shortcut.

Oh no, I'll have to check that out - never noticed that ! But I don't think his canines require makeup, but yea, he did use some sort of help on those chompers ! << Chaney Sr. certainly already enjoyed fairly widespread currency before the film historians arrived in town. << Thanks for the correction! My favorite? Y'know ... there are days when I genuinely think it's Lionel Atwill.

If Mantan was in the scene, you'd be watching him.

Mantan Moreland is unquestionably a splendid, versatile actor, but I've always been partial to the later films of his only child, the great and vastly unappreciated Sontan Morland...

Hah. I can claim to share a birthday with Grace Slick. Or Michael Winner if I'm really desperate. I shall pick Lon Jr as my second fave after Vinnie. VP was such a big icon in my childhood I guess, plus I can remember a time he was alive and well and making films occasionally.
