Thread: Which chain tool is best?

Started 1 year, 4 months ago by cbrsmurf
Having to change many chains now, I think it would be best for me buy my own chain tool now. I was wondering which chain too is the easiest to use and most durable. I have used the Motion Pro before (borrowed) and ended up braking a pin. It was also difficult to rivet the link on as well. Any recommendations?

I've got the Motion Pro kit (a bit flimsy) which I bring to the track with me but in the shop I use a few different heavier duty chain tools. I really like this tool and I've got one of the older versions with a built in handle instead of the bolt head/wrench setup which I really like. http://www.smithtoolinfo.com/a8050.htm I use a special set of Vise-Grips with a side plate ...

I use the motion pro heavy duty model that you can mount in a vise and it comes with a screw on handle to ease use in tight areas. Cost about $150 3~4 years ago but well worth it for riveting a chain or busting one. The motion pro above is the cheaper model and will break with ease. The one I have is for industrial use where chains are being used on machinery in a factory enviroment.

+1 on RK. Ive used it on about 20 chains now and its holding up like a beast. Half of them I didnt even bother grinding the rivet down either. Also, I used to work at a big online parts store and we sold about 1-2 RK Tools a day on average. We probably sold 1 or 2 motion pro's a month. http://www.solomotoparts.com/product...2&cat=0&page=1

have the motion pro, hate it (as some others indicated as well). Even griding the ends of the ml. the push pins are flimsy and break, and the damn thing just takes a long time to assemble. Got the RK after using from someone else and like it much better. It does make the job a bit easier to dremel the ends of the ml off.
