I'm sure it is subjective, but when it comes to skill level, what is considered Beginner Level? Intermediate Level? Advanced Level? How do you know when you're 'good'?

You're asking for an opinion, of course, so here's mine. Beginner - Knows three chords, G, C and D7. Can play maybe three songs, but not all the way through....and his timing sucks. Intermediate - Knows a lot of chords, including barre chords, can do about an hours worth of pretty good stuff without repeating anything and has a good sense of timing. Advanced - Can play all night, ...

While there are various factors in judging levels of musicianship, technical proficiency is perhaps the most obvious and easiest to discuss. Most players will always be in the beginner to intermediate level -- those two levels deal mainly with acquiring fundamental techniques and trying to properly apply them. Beginners have more technical issues than intermediate players do. Beginners are ...

I have no fricking clue but I've got the first one covered, the second one wears a wrinkled brow and the last has it's back turned to me respectfully muffling a snicker.

Beginner is just a place where you start. After that, it's all relative. I've heard basic musicians play great music. I've seen accomplished musicians play crap. Music is not a null-sum proposition. It's not quantitative in/re technical mastery = higher quality. "Good"? I dunno. I may be called good by my peers, but there is still a lot more to master, many challenging things to achieve before ...

When someone is moved by your playing?

gitnoob replied 1 month, 2 weeks ago
I will always be a noob at some aspect of git playing, and I like that idea. To me, learning is more fun than mastering.

My thinking is that you're an advanced musician once you've got two or three sets rehearsed to the point where you almost can't make a mistake.

In any system of formal instruction there are levels. If the Intermediate level starts with Book #5, a student on the "continuum" of being halfway thru Book #1 could be safely considered a Beginner. That is unless he or she is a Bass player. __________________ Be Hear Now. Support Live Music. "People may say I can't sing, but no one can ever say I didn't sing." - Florence Foster Jenkins

In my case, it boils down to my mental state but it seems as real as anything. Quote: Originally Posted...

I dunno either. I do know that I can play songs that I once despaired of playing, and, put me in with other musicians, I can usually add something musical to the mix. Notwithstanding jazz..... I find jazz, for the most part, incomprehensible and too dissonant. That's just the way my brain is wired, I guess. Cheers, Glenn

I'll always be a beginner. Once I get the hang of something, I move on to trying to learn something else.

In general people are not listening to your playing in an attempt to "break down" your guitar technique and skills (unless you are in a jam with other guitarists). Most audiences are listening to the overall song "ensemble", including arrangement, vocals, instruments, volume, etc. If you take an instrumenal break during a song, then yes there will be some attention paid to it, but again they will judge you...
