Where is LV426, in relation to Earth and our solar system? Is this ever explained? I haven't seen the movie in several months, and can't remember.
"Yeah, but it's a DRY heat!" (Aliens, 1986)
What is the Space Jockey ship doing on such a wasted ball like LV-426? Emergency landing due to alien infestation? Hostile planet environment combined with acoustical beacon to warn off approaching ships?
To answer the OP question, the exact location of LV426 relative to Earth is never explained. All we know is that it takes 17 days to get there.
Kill them all "with kindness". Let God ...
Its roughly half way between Earth and Thadeus where the crew from A1 was returning from. Once the atmosphere was made breathable it could have been a good stop/outpost between Earth and Thaeus which had valuable minerals.
I think the actual location is undetermined. However in Alien, it's stated that they are 10 months from Earth. In Aliens Special Edition, the colonists say it takes 2 weeks to get an answer. A few theories here.
1. Either they use courier ships which are typically faster than standard ships.
2. Or their technology has increased and the ships simply move faster.
3. The Nostromo ...
Well as there really is a Zeta2 Reticuli, then it must be here:
Zeta Reticuli is a binary star system located about 39 light years away from Earth. It is located in the constellation Reticulum, and is visible to the unaided eye under very dark skies. Because of the southerly location of the system, it is not visible north of the tropics. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeta_Reticuli

"Help" is stated to be 17 days away, but it's not clear if it's expected to come from Earth or some closer planet/military base/ship/whatever that could respond to the emergency faster.
