For those of you who had a video montor pointed at the crib, when did you put it away? We have a 21-month-old and it occurred to me that at some point in the future it is going to be "weird" and the child should have an expectation of privacy.
When you got rid of it, was it due to a certain milestone or it was something where you just knew it was the right time?
The wife feels we should ...
Hmmm...that's a hard one...I've thought about that too. We have a 24 month old and we still use a monitor, a regular one-not video. I feel at ease knowing that I can still hear him if he crys out. But you have a good questions...when do you take it away???
DD is 23 months and we haven't even considered taking it out. I don't think she even realizes that its there or what its purpose is (the camera sits on her dresser, so its not attached to the crib or anything).
I would say it would be ok to take it away when the child gets to an age when you feel comfortable with them playing in their room without regular supervision.
My DS is 2 and I will not allow him to play in his room. We have a 2 story house and he plays in the living room. All his toys are down here and his room is only for sleep. When he is a little older he will be allowed to play ...
My son is 28 months, and I don't plan to move his video monitor anytime soon. It is pointed right at his big boy bed. The little tv is set up right in my face at night, so I know what's going on at all times. I joked with my dh that he will be 12 and explaining to his friends why there's a camera in his room!!!!
Dawn
I would think maybe after you switch to a regular bed, and your son has a few months to adjust to his newfound "freedom."
I don't think he should expect privacy (or even understand the concept, for that matter!) for another couple years, though, so if thats your basis I think you have plenty of time before you need to get rid of it.
I have a 23 month old and we still have the video monitor up. I personally think it is all about what the parent is comfortable with. I don't think you will have to worry about your child having their own privacy at least for a few more years. As for now, it's all about peace of mind. I still use it in case my little one wakes up crying or whining in the middle of the night. I can then see ...
I have a 23month old and a 9 yr old. I keep it in the room until 3 or 4. With my 9 yr old I brought it back out when he was 6 though. I used it for the back yard. The yard was fenced and we had a lock on the gate. I wouldn't leave him unattended for a long time or anything, but the kitchen opened into the back yard so it gave me the option of occasionally stepping in to get drinks, snacks, ...
My DD is 2.5. We never had a video monitor but we stopped using her baby monitor when she turned 2. She transitioned to a toddler bed at 21 months and that gave me peace of mind for a few months that when she was playing in there, she was okay. Now I know she is fine playing in her room if she gets up and if she needs something, she can just come get me.

We never had a video montior but DS, who is 25 months, doesn't even have a regular monitor in his room anymore (took it out when it had to go in the new baby's room, around 22 months, give or take).? DS has also been in a tollder bed since 11 months and we never felt the need to see him, we knew his room was safe.

I guess it depends on when you feel comfortable doing so. My dd is 2 and I still use the video monitor at night. During the day for naps, I rarely use it, but at night I do. I will probably keep it in there until I need it for the next LO that comes along.?

My son is 18 months and we just moved him to a toddler bed. I plan on using the monitor for at least another year or two, mostly so I can see what he is doing in his room and to make sure he is still in his room. I am mostly concerned about him getting out of his room and getting hurt by falling down the stairs or getting in to the bathroom, which is attached to his room. I guess when I can trust that he can safely go up and down the stairs...
