I got it sorted! It was the registering that was the problem! Environment: win vista,Lightroom 2.0. I had a trial version of lightroom earlier but I uninstalled that and then installed lightroom from the cd.

Thinking out of the box. I would try downloaded the latest version 2.4 and install over 2.0 then install the serial number you have from the disk. It is possible the V  2.0 is trying to open a old catalog from v 2.3 and it is not compatable? Just a thought.

Delete prefs file, here's how . Open, enter serial number and up date to version 2.4
