Thread: What's up with people riding way-too-small 5-spots? 2nd page of DWL 5spot thread

Started 1 month, 3 weeks ago by Jayem
There's one on the first page, but a bunch on the second. These aren't even close to the right size. I can see some people that are in-between and that can go both ways, but these aren't those people. You'll see setback posts + long stems and super-extended seatposts. These people are going to rip the seat-tube from the welds.

silly girls still think they're a size two.

I think DT should add a footnote to the sizing chart that says "and oh, by the way, if you have over xyz inches of seat post showing, you need the next size up". And though I'm an admitted big fan of Turner bikes, it still pisses me off that the new Sultans are shorter in the TT dimension for a given size. After 10 rides or so, I quit noticing it, but still, PLEASE SIR, MAY I HAVE THAT HALF...

Yeah, it's crazy. I see some that are "possibly" too small, but also not excessively so, but there are quite a few that are just WAY too small, they aren't even close to correct. One way to deal with it would be to say: "if you have to use over x length seatpost, you are on too small of a frame". I'm sure some of those posts are 410mm. I guess it's just that you are NEVER going to change ...

My guess is people are sizing their bikes just off the seat tube sizes not realizing that turners run shorter top tubes for a given size than most companies, and because of the slanted top tube with a brace you can easily run a much longer seat tube without having stand over problems. I didn't see one size xl on the 2nd page, and going off the geometry that size would be perfect for anyone over ...

Ha But not as bad as used to be, as new Spots have increased head tube length on med from 4" to 4.5" and on large from 5" to 5.3" so they dont need huge numbers of spacers or superhigh rise bars now to get the front end to fit!!!

idrivefun replied 1 month, 3 weeks ago
Went off the Turner site recomendation... I'm 6'1", and went with a large. In hind site, I would make the same call. The seat to grip height is less than an inch off and no, I don't have 4" of spacers!

I agree, after years of buying medium frames, at only 5'10" or so it seems like I am on the cusp. But I bought a large this last go around with the DW Flux, and I couldn't even imagine being on a medium!! I still have quite a bit of post showing on the large. I am riding a 350mm Thompson post and only have about an 1"-1 12" before the max line. Ryan. Quote:...

So I guess it does come down to opinion and you know what they say about opinions and everyone having one. I run a longer stem 100 or 110, can't decide which I prefer yet. In either case, they fit me, my riding style I reckon, and my terrain better (midwest). If I lived in the land of downhills and superchunk, I'd be all over a shorter stem. I again come back to the Turner site pic above, how long does that stem look? I say 100....

25 Hours of Halloween in Northern Santa Barbara County, CA. This year I was on a 4 man team and riding my old Flux, but last year I was soloing on my TNT Sultan and it was great.

Crazy! When I bought my XL Sultan I was VERY worried about frame size. The standover measurement really had me on edge but the TT and reach seemed just right. Glad I didn't change my mind.

On my medium frame the seat tube -top tube c-c is only about 11",i have about 240mm of post on show

Maybe it's the angle of the photo... unless you think the rear wheel is a 29er and the front is a 24". Also, I need to agree with Pjlama... DT, since I bought based on your sizing chart, and am now taking shiat... send me the XL to try... Bottom line is I ride a bike that fits me and to hell with ya'll!!!
