Thread: What type of Transmission Fluid do I need?

What type of Transmission Fluid do I need? I am confused. Do I need to go to the ford dealer and Pickup Mercon V? I have a 2001 XLT V6 FWD. Thanks!

Mercon V is widely available. Mercon has been discontinued. (There is no such thing as Mercon III) You can still find fluids that are "Mercon Equivalent", and I'm sure that the companies that made Mercon in the past haven't forgotten how. You're right about Mercon III, I was thinking Dexron. Are you sure about mixing Mercon and Mercon V? Doing the drain/fill will always leave a substantial amount of old fluid in the tranny.

NEVER mix Mercon I and V. Either one will work fine in the transmission but it is a very bad idea to mix both. I had the original Mercon in mine, I brought it to the dealer, had them do a complete flush and filled it up with Mercon V after, now I can do drain and fills when I want to without worrying about contamination.
