Thread: What shocks to buy?

Started 6 months ago by jnstro
My rear shocks are shot on my '98 E320 station wagon. I did an internet search and found several for sale anywhere from $40 up to $400. I can't afford the high-dollar ones, but what's the best bang for my buck? I'd like to get away with cheaper ones, but not if they're junk. Also, a mechanic friend looked it up in his book and it says it takes 6 hours to change them - that's 3 hours per ...

No way it would take that long. It took me about 1/2 hour per wheel onmy e320 sedan...and I was drinking beer and taking my time. Look at the DIY sticky. It doesn't get more helpful than that. Not sure how different the wagon is.

Your rear "shocks" are not normal shocks. They are just hydraulic cylinders so they do not really wear out like normal shocks. However, if they have leaks, then they have to be replaced (only replace the leaky one). If your wagon is bouncing too hard in the rear, it is not because of the "shocks". The "shock absorbing" functions on these wagons are accomplished by accumulators (balls). ...

Here is your rear accumulator (item 47). One on each side near the wheels.

I am hearing a sound from the rear wheel section on both sides when I drive, and it happens when I go over holes on the road. My Wagon has 180,000km. Do the rear accumulators need to be replaced at about this milage? I have been trying to find my problem for a while. Thank-You

The accumulators fail when they develop internal leaks between fluid and the gas chamber. Then the rear would be very hard as if there were no "shock absorbing." What kind of sound do you hear?

Hi Fi replied 1 month, 2 weeks ago
I am hearing a clunk sound almost like if I didn't have rear shocks. I sat in the rear of the car this week and the sound seemed to come from both rear wheel regions. This seems to have started a few weeks ,or a month ago. This sound doesn't come from the front at all only from the rear.

Another thing to check/confirm is the hydraulic fluid level in the reservoir. If it is significantly low, it is another sign the accumulators have gone bad (internal leak).

Hi Fi replied 1 month, 2 weeks ago
Where exactly is the reservoir? Is the reservoir inside the accumulator? Thanks

My fluid in my reservoir was below minimum. I added fluid and now my car goes well,no more clunk sound. I will verify my fluid regularly to see if it goes low again. Thanks for all the help.
