Thread: What multimedia/gaming laptop should I buy?
Started 1 month, 3 weeks ago by kusogaki
I'm debating whether or not to get something like the D900f/01 or M980NU from AVAdirect, or a comparable alienware m17x. Below are my preferences. Any direction you guys could offer would be extremely appreciated, as after so much researching I'm a little overwhelmed by the exhaustive options. I read somewhere that i7 quad cores are best run with (ati only?) gpus in SLI, and that 280m's aren't ...
15 inch:
Sager NP8690, Asus G51J, Asus G51VX, Alienware m15x (I'm diggin the 8690)
17 inch:
Extreme 840, Sager NP8760 or 9280, Asus G71, Alienware m17x
18 inch:
Sager 9850
All those laptops here except the Alienware ones, but I think you could find those on your own:

Well, you probably already know about the Alienware M17x, which would allow you to get the most powerful GPU and close to the most powerful CPU, although it would cost quite a bit over $3000 to get. Another option might be the Asus G71Gx-A2 with the QX9300 processor. It's a bit less than $3000, although it doesn't have the SLI gpu.
Just a tip. For gaming, quad-core might not always be the ...

Wow! What a coincidence! You posted this at exactly the same time I was posting mine. It'll be interesting to see the difference in recommendations given that I was aiming for slightly less wrt gaming. But in retrospect, Kusogaki, the best games at 60FPS does sound like a thing of beauty! It looks like I have come to pretty much the same conclusions as you have. We may well be forking out for the...

I mean One of my close friends that I've known for many years is about to get a alienware just for the name. If I can't convince him not to get it, I may aswell try to convince you
In regards to GPU, you may have noticed that even the same model may use different types and amounts of ram. Most of the high-end laptops suggested probably are using 1024MB with DDR3 rather than DDR2, so there should be no problems there. Another thing to keep in mind is the graphic card drivers. If you don't have a good driver for your card, you may not get optimal performance. ATI make some great cards that can compete on even footing...

Anyway, I was wondering what you'd recommend for the cpu on it. It...
