Thread: What kind of bamboo for making inserts?

Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by stayinhomewithmy4
Happy Tuesday to all of you! I'm going to be making some inserts to go in the pocket diapers I'm also making. I want trim, absorbent inserts. I read somewhere that bamboo is the most absorbent while also being very trim. Is this true? Is there a better option? Hemp maybe? Anyway, back to the bamboo. I was going to order some from kidsinthegarden.com and realized that they have several ...

You are correct, the fleece and/or double sided terry are the most absorbent. All of the bamboo inserts I have gotten have been 3 layers of bamboo fleece and 1 layer of terry, don't know why though.

Yes, they are pretty trim and soooo absorbent. I don't know if this is the way with every bamboo insert, but the ones I have seem flimsy (don't know if that is the right word), but they bunch up and cause leaks, so I find I have to pair them with something else (usually I wrap an infant prefold around them, doesn't add too much bulk and keeps them from bunching). I am not familiar with burley...

The bamboo double-terry I purchased off FSOT is thin but probably representative of most bamboo double-terry. It's not like a bathtowel at all. More like the thickness of a baby terry towel (but terry loops on both sides). The only issue I have with my bamboo/hemp fleece is that the fleece side will pill and if it's on the inside of the insert it will leave little lumps (not big by any means)....

Yes, french terry is an excellent choice, and the bamboo/hemp gets great reviews as well.
