Thread: What is the present state of the Japanese bicycle industry?

document.write(' '); Clearly Japanese bikes are a major subset of C&V -- Miyata, Fuji, Panasonic, etc. And we all know about Shimano. But what we don't seem to see are new bikes from Japan. What are the Japanese producing, both steel and carbon? Thanks RFC

Good question. The only brand I still see new in shops with any regularity is Fuji. I don't think the others export to the US market. Panasonic still produces bikes and it looks like Yellow Jersey imports them: http://www.yellowjersey.org/panak.html http://www.yellowjersey.org/posd7.html

Rivendell gets their top end stuff made in Japan as do a few other companies I believe. I know that Grant just recently posted that the rising Yen is making that impossible while still maintaining a reasonable price. Considering I think the models are priced on the high end I can't imagine what unreasonable might be. I think Taiwan production really did damage to the Japanese ...

It wasn't the Taiwanese who did the damage, it was when the dollar/yen ratio changed dramatically. Taiwan saved the Japanese bike companies because that is where they moved their production to.

It wasn't the Taiwanese who did the damage, it was when the dollar/yen ratio changed dramatically. Taiwan saved the Japanese bike companies because that is where they moved their production to. ... and it's a great way to stay in shape. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sn5l9JwuUmk

Miyata is still making bikes... but as Koga Miyata. Right? 1988 Centurion Dave Scott Master Ironman 1985 Nishiki Century (too small) 1985 Schwinn Cruiser 5 (neglected)
