Incredible film! But I've always wondered wouldn't it of been epic if Maximus did escape and reached his army, seeing their response to seeing their general alive and the army taking back rome with maximus at the front! Commudus hiding in his home and Maximus confronting him there with a final battle. What you guys think?
Stupid.
That would be boring. Yay, everyone lives happily every after, Russel and Connie kissing in the sunset while Lucius says "I love you spaniord".
Screw that, I want an epic ending, just as it is now. Perfect.
I like the idea, not because of a happy ending, but because I would see more battles. This movie really lacked battles, like the one it started with. But then again, I can't complain about that because the movie is called Gladiator :P
Except of course for the fact that his legion would be branded Traitors and probably have every Legio nthat's in the area sent after them. Then his legion would have to gte past the Urban Cohorts and then the Praetorians.
Wouldn't really matter, the Emperor would summon his armies and it would be ended.
The roman empire had more than one main force.

Yes, Rome has more than 1 army, but an armies hundreds of miles away would not save him. All Maximus needed to do was pierce through the Rome defense and capture the Emperor, not defeat the entire army of Rome.
I think it would be a boring final battle between commodus and Maximus, as Maximus wouldn't have had a punctured lung while fighting him and Commodus would be dead in several seconds.

Yeah, all he had to do was pierce through the Rome Defence, oh, wait, that consisted of probably around 9,000 or more Praetorians and then another 9,000 or so Urban Cohorts soldiers oh and the Vigiles too, with his own legion that had...

I'm surprised the Battle between Max and Commodus was so short. I expected a longer more dramatic battle scene. It happened so quickly. If anyone had to go to the bathroom during this scene in the theatre they would have missed it coming back.
