The Birts just do it wrong. Corporations are singular entities, therefore the single-person case should be used. If Google was 1 employee, would the British still refer to it in the multiple-person case?

Haven't people read/watched news from both the US and UK? It's kind of pathetic that people haven't figured out for themselves difference between American English and British English. Just like how everyone notices this mistake, people should have picked up on the differences between the languages much sooner. It's not like it's Spanish and French. Los seres humanos son estúpidos. No, not quite. Wiki states quite clearly that it depends on whether the emphasis is on the individuals of a body or the body as a whole. In the context of the Digg headline, it makes absolutely no sense that there are several individual employees at Google who are watching you. Google collectively has a lot of information, but you will probably find no individual employee at Google who actually knows anything about you. Google as a company...

If you use Gmail, or Google Voice, or Docs, and their search engine, then they "know" everything there is to know about you. However, for some reason we trust them. They don't seem to be doing anything heinous, except offering us free apps in exchange for all our personal information. Hopefully their stock will keep soaring, and they will never be owned by another company.
