Thread: What did YOU do for sport and fun as a kid?

Started 1 month, 3 weeks ago by karjoy
I read with some concern an article on CNN.com or Time.com a few days ago about obesity and inactivity in our children. Obviously, this is a multifaceted problem with many causes and solutions. The really sad part for me is that many of these kids may be headed for diabetes and heart disease at an early age. In my own practice I have recently seen a 38 year old and a 32 year old diabetic. ...

I recently heard someone discussing a baseball player who played ice hockey growing up. The comment was made that he was brought up in Pennsylvania so OF COURSE he could ice skate! My entire family did so, and I remember having pink plastic "training" ice skates. We were constantly outside, both winter and summer, and I think this also provided a break for the neighborhood moms! We played in ...

Not a thing in the world. I hated sports then, just as I hate it now. I think you might find that if you shifted the focus from competitve sports to "activity" you would be able to interest more kids. Some of us just aren't wired for that.

I think there are so many dimensions to the problem. I do think that things have changed in terms of parenting. Parenting has become much more hands on and kids endure a tremendous amount of supervision. The impulsive kickball on the corner or bike ride around town with friends has all but disappeared as parents are now fearful for their kids' safety. I think that this continual adult ...

Nothing, and it showed. And in college when we had to take two exercise classes, I took bowling and archery. I might as well have taken Basic Lounging or Theory of Sit On Your Duff. I had small exposures to vinyl & cassette workouts, but for the most part, everybody was pretty surprised one day when I started jogging.

I grew up in the Chicago suburbs. In the summers we would play softball and tennis. We would ride our bikes EVERYWHERE!! We played tag, kickball, dodge ball, 4-square, boys chase the girls (my mom did not like this game) and just basically ran around the neighborhood. In the winters we would go ice skating on an outdoor rink and play in the snow. We walked EVERYWHERE! Most of my memories of...

I lived about 3 blocks from my elementary school. It was a usual passtime to go there and play on the monkey bars and such. Climbing, swinging, hanging upside down. I was also fortunate that there were some woods around my neighborhood. Heck, there was a state park about 4 blocks away that had 20 miles of trails. I'd hike to the creek and back. Those days, child abduction wasn't ...

I thought of this thread today when I received my daughter's report card. She's in both math and reading classes above her grade level, and her report card had all 1's (outstanding) - with the sole exception of PE, where she got a 3 (needs to make more effort). Yep, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree!

I taught in a private school, and one of the teachers complained loudly about what was available for school lunches. Actually, he complained about what wasn't available: fresh fruit. It turns out that because the school lunches were contracted out feedback fell on deaf ears. The caterers were interested in making a profit, and that profit came from selling a) cheaper product for as much as they could get away with (it cost them less to...

I haven't had it since I moved away from PA (and wouldn't eat it now...
