My wife was gardening in sandals, felt something crawling over one of her feet, looked down and saw: A coral snake. Except it had a head when it crawled over her foot. Eliot, I have not seen many. I came close to catching one that managed to duck into a pile of sticks. I dug around briefly but never flushed him from his hiding place. A guy at work caught one years ago but let it go after a couple of days because he couldn't get it to eat. I think they have a reputation for not doing as well in captivity as our more common and social snakes.
