Thread: Were the hand phasers dissappointing to you?
Started 7 months, 1 week ago by Captain Pike
When they were in a firefight on the Narada I wanted to see the phaser
beams instead of pulses and also I wanted to see vaporization like in Wrath
of Kahn and TOS. I wasn't impressed. Were you?
I thought they were great. I always thought the beams took a lot of time and wouldn't be good in a "fire fight, per se.
I thought the pulses fit the story and the action better.
I figure it was another way to make it more like an action movie. It was too bad... and tactically unsound, actually... they don't take any more time to fire, and if one just moves the thing about the room during the discharge, you can take out multiple enemies. I could have killed all those enemies in one arc.
I like the pulses better, actually. It makes more sense that the sort of
power required to fire is produced in short bursts, recharge (the
equivalent of a new round entering the chamber of a regular gun), short
bursts instead of a continual creation of energy forming a steady stream.
You'd think the phaser would overheat with all that. Bet it makes the
battery pack or whatever it's powered by ...
I thought the phasers were really cool, especially when the barrel part
would flip when changing settings. It would have been nice to have seen a
beam in some parts though.

The pulse is much more useful in battle, also did you notice it seems to
take effect on the target much faster! The singe of flesh was an
interesting sound from a phaser.
I did wonder why Kirk switched from
kill to stun for the last Romulan. Maybe it was just to show off the way the barrel flips or because the guy didn't seem to be armed. No point killing him if he's not trying to kill you, I guess. At least...I don't remember him being armed. I could be wrong.

It was the way it fired and the effects used to show it's energy output. It was truly "pew pew...

True. But a phaser is not a laser. Who knows how PHASedEnergyRectification works? Maybe the particles in the beam emit their own light? Who knows. Sci-Fi is so cool.
