Try brown-wire mod if you don't want to replace 4x4 module - can't hurt anything and it might do the trick.

thefox02 replied 1 month, 1 week ago
what does that do and how do you do it?

Johnny Glenn replied 1 month, 1 week ago
There's several posts describing what and how to -- search brown-wire mod.

Have you driven through very high water lately? The reason I ask is my 2002 explorer had some of the same issues as you are having after I drove through some high water during a heavy rain. Mine was fixed by unplugging the large connector on top of the trasfer case. Dry it out and then pack it full of dielectric grease. Hope this helps you out.
