Thread: Was it really that good ? (SPOILERS)

Started 2 months, 1 week ago by aaronb955
I read a lot of comments and reviews about this movie before I finally watched it last night. Many people said that it was one of the best movies ever made. Really? I must admit that the acting, direction, music, cinematography was top notch, but the one reason why this movie is such a favorite of people is the story , the plot. And sure, it was very much an unconventional story that we haven't ...

Your reason for hating the film is rather odd. Well not hating but not liking. I mean your "plot" holes are lacking. Your doesn't make sense arguments, don't make sense. I mean he found out Mido was his daughter. What part didn't you get in that? He didn't get his revenge in the movie. Woo-Jin did. Woo-Jin told Oh Dae Su, Mido was his daughter. Why would he look for his lost daughter if he ...

You say that you admit that the acting, direction, music and cinematography was 'top notch.' That does make for a good movie. And yes the plot twists were good, I just get the feeling that you didn't like it, which is fair enough, but that doesn't make it a bad film, just 'not your cup of tea', so to speak. And to say scenes were too melodramatic IT'S A FILM! A non melodramatic film would ...

Your missing the second twist. You have almost all the clues in your post. Think Vanilla Sky or Eternal Sunshine.

Guys, I never said I hated or totally disliked the movie. I just didn't see the "greatness" of it (especially the ending) what with all the hype and a planned remake by Steven Spielberg. (Oh well, if Spielberg is remaking it 'cause it was so great then surely I missed something). Ok, I was talking about him looking for his daughter after it all ended , after his memory of the meeting with ...

I take it you didn't read any of the interviews? Did you see any of the special features? Park asked for a purposely ambiguous smile that showcases signs of a deranged man. I think you weren't meant to understand this film, really. It wasn't meant to be over your head, but you made it so. Watch it again, then watch the interviews with the director in the special features. If you still ...

You are looking much too far. The film ended with him hugging mido and smiling in a deranged way. But we don't know how the story will go on. We don't know if he will look for his daughter later on and we also don't know if he will continue his relationship with mido. So the open ending theory is not just a fanboy fantasy because it is an open ending and we don't know how it will go on. Heroes...

If understanding the movie requires watching interviews and special features then there is no point to this discussion is there? So you figured that it was a deranged ambigous smile after you saw the special features in the 3 disc edition did you genious? There is nothing that went over the head. There is nothing complicated here. I get it. Just don't think it's worth all the hype.

baygerbieger replied 2 months, 1 week ago
You clearly don't get it, or else you wouldn't have come on here shouting.... "HUH?!?" Anyways, I said you could stand to watch the interviews in order to understand the film. I understood it fine. I didn't come on here shouting idiotic questions. Think you may just be a lazy troll. Judging on the history.... Well I'm right. I'm always right. Stand By For Action!

Still butthurt because you can't understand movies? That's okay, if I were an idiot child who fails at trolling I'd be too. I mean I assume, I can't imagine being as stupid as you, really. Stand By For Action!

Also, I thought it would be interesting to see if anyone could convince me that I'd missed something in the film. I think it's extremely difficult to change someone's mind once it has been made up regarding a movie. If I could make you like Oldboy somehow, I'd be thrilled, but I don't see that happening; you have a pretty entrenched perspective of the movie, and I actually do understand where you're coming from...

ok so now it's clear why baygerbieger is defending this movie with his life. He is a fanboy who asked a question to the great Park. I know why you didn't get your dvds autographed.. they were covered with jizz after you whacked off to him at the theater.

agracru - go get some self-esteem else where. you are here with a big stick up your ass. grow up. and i say that kindly. oldboy is over-hyped nonsense, and some of the reviews on imdb explain why very very well. have a nice day - i'm not gonna indulge you any longer.

...'above all the characters and their motivations are well presented, and the characters fleshed out perfectly.' I don't think that the character of Woo Jin is fleshed out sufficiently. He's a very peripheral character throughout much of the film, someone who occasionally steps out of the shadows with his robotic looking minder. Compare 'Oldboy' with 'Lady Vengeance' in this respect. In the latter film,...

Your still missing it by a long shot. Think about the last scene. Who was sitting on the chair with Dae Su in the snow? What part does she play in the film? What does she say right away in that scene and what can you gather from it?

Well, each to his/her own. You sum it up quite well, you feel the story "makes no sense", why bothering debating here if you're already convinced of that? Debating should be a process where you exchange ideas, not impose them. You're reasoning as to why Oldboy is "overhyped" is a very simplistic argument, because the plot devices are not "realistic", ignoring in the process...
