Thread: Want recs for mystery with humor, not too gory and ugly, but not a silly cozy either

Started 3 months, 1 week ago by Wendy
I'm a fugitive from the romance forum and I'm burnt out. I'm wanting some good mysteries to read. I've read pretty much all of Charlotte Macleod, Agatha Christie, Rex Stout, David Rosenfelt, Elliot Roosevelt, Jill Churchill (earliest Jane Jeffries), Tony Hillerman, and a little Lee Child. I want something less silly than MacLeod, but still with humor and a touch of cozy. Books with a stong...

Anne George's Southern Sisters - there are 8 - first is Murder on a Girls' Night Out. Not funny, but beautifully written - season, era, etc. - Charles Finch's A Beautiful Blue Death and The September Society. The third should be out in a few weeks. Sophie Dunbar's Eclaire series - first is Behind Eclaire's Door Kate Ross' Julian Kestrel - first is Cut to the Quick

Try Donna Andrews. They are light and funny, but very well written IMO. It is important to read the first one, Murder with Peacocks first, A Murder Hatched: Murder with Peacocks and Murder with Puffins, the First Two Books in the Meg Langslow Series (Meg Langslow Mysteries) after that it doesn't matter so much. Have you read Elizabeth Peters Amelia Peabody series? The first one ...

If you can find them, I would recommend D. R. Meredith's Murder By series (starts with Murder by Impulse). It is five books taking place in the Texas Panhandle. The characters are larger than life but interesting and they grow throughout the series.

Try Sharyn McCrumb's Ballads Theyre less cozy than the Elizabeth McPherson series

I have recently discovered Chris Grabenstein and am enjoying his books for all the reasons you mention in your initial post. I ,too, have read all the authors you mention and enjoyed them in the past. Grabenstein has a way with words and dialog that some times makes you want to read the page over for another smile! These books might be classed as a police procedural, but they are really ...

Try "The War Against Miss Winter" by Kathryn Miller Haines. If you like it there are two more in the series. World War II era in NYC and the theatre.

I have several suggestions for humorous, non-cozy mysteries: 1) Lisa Lutz is the author of a series starring protagonist Izzy Spellman, a 28 year old private detective who works in her family's PI business in San Francisco. I think this series is very funny, starting with the very first scene. There are three books in the series now, with a fourth on the way in March 2010. Start with ...

Wendy, I have a cozy mystery with a strong sense of the upcoming season and Holiday, with a touch of humor and light romance. No gore and no swearing. My novel, The Haunted Hillerman House , is available on Kindle and in paperback through my website and Amazon.com. It has secret messages. Family secrets. A Halloween night trip to the family crypt. For more information on this title, ...

If you are/were a romance reader, you may enjoy the mysteries of Georgette Heyer, many of which had long been out of print but are now being published by Sourcebooks. Heyer wrote many witty romances during her long career and some of that wit may be found in her mysteries.. . Of course, humor is a question of taste, so if your idea of humor is not witty repartee but rather slapstick ...

Downloaded samples of "The Spellman File" and "Open and Shut". Read and ordered "Open and Shut". Will read the Spellman sample tomorrow. Thanks for bringing these up.

You might like Virginia Lanier. Good, solid mysteries, not silly at all. The House on Bloodhound Lane (not sure this is the first. The series is about a lady that raises bloodhounds and also makes them available as trackers. She goes out with her dogs on many an emergency.) I second anything by Elizabeth Peters. Her Vicky bliss series is lighter than the Amelia Peabody, but both are very good. The Spellman File mysteries above are pretty...

Have you tried Lee Harris? Very good, and most set around a holiday. For sheer silliness, Tamara Myers.

Wendy, My favorite author is Dick Frances. He has written 45 Books (43 fiction, 2 non-fiction). All but 6 can be read in any order as each has a different hero with different careers although many in his early books were jockeys since the author was the Queen Mum's champion steeplechase jockey before he started to write. His heroes are hardworking, honest, respectful of women and just plain nice guys. While they may get beaten up,...
