Thread: Wanna buy a Yacht? Zero emissions!

Started 2 months ago by Dun Fudgin
Ferretti Group said its new 78-foot motor yacht is the largest zero-emission pleasure craft in the world. Powered by a hybrid (diesel-electric) propulsion system, the ``transplaning hull'' claims to cut fuel consumption by 40 percent with a range of 1,000 miles. Company vice president Andrea Frabetti said the boat can reach a top speed of 16 knots and run silently -- even with air-...

It looks neat Dun, and very efficient, but I don't understand how they can say that a diesel powered craft is zero emission. Running on battery power alone is marketing slight of hand. Also, if you plug it in for a recharge, unless the power you use comes from wind, sun, hydro or nuke, it isn't zero emission either.

Agreed. That is a very strange claim to make.

What ever sells it for the highest price. Someone with enough money will buy the line of BS.

That company is releasing some questionable emissions.

Rowing a dugout made with stone tools is the only way for zero emmisions. Unless you fart.

I think they were implying when the battery power mode is used.

"Frabetti said the Mochi Craft costs about $1 per mile to operate, compared with about $4 per mile for a conventional diesel-powered yacht." Well, that's one lie that really cracks me up! I bet running on battery power alone the boat would not even make the Dogbar and back from the inner harbor. I guess he is not figuring in the cost of crew and all the other nonsense.

This sort of stuff periodically washes through the industry, often with patent# attached to confirm 'credibility'. Most of these patents won't be broken or challenged as they are 'practically' useless (not for the patent-attorney). And the hype often gets settled in a court of law by aggrieved buyers - or just dies off due to obvious' problems and thus zero clients.

A diesels with unlimited emission controls , or a coal fired generator on shore thru the umbilical cord. With electric motors on battery power driving the propellers in silence; with all on-board utilities powered by the battery pack; and with the yacht plugged into shore power while overnight in port.
