Thread: Walking your kitties?

Started 3 weeks, 6 days ago by Nalla and- Bella
Do any of you guys take your indoor cats for "walks"? I mean, with harnesses and leashes and the whole bit? I'm thinking about buying a cat harness and leash so I can start taking my girls for walks. I feed them a moderate amount, not too much and not too little, and they're pretty active around the house, but they still seem to be gaining a lot of blubber on their tummies. They have these "...

Welcome to Catster! If I understand it right, you have only had Tyce for a couple of days. It takes an adult cat a good 10 days to adjust to a new home, it takes kittens 14 days, and a cat coming from an abusive situation, it could take months. I know, I had one years ago. Her name was Kitty Kat, she had been severly abused. A friend of a friend found her in a snowbank, ...

Hey Bumpurr--I think the peroxide is for the human's bite wounds, not to spray Tyce with!

Dusty replied 3 months, 1 week ago
Hi Bumpurr! Thanks for responding....I just want you to know that the peroxide is for US! to put on the bites/scratches! I would NEVER spray the cat! I figure any adversive act on our part will only make the matter worse...I realize he's biting out of fear. I did speak with the foster and she told me she just waited him out to approach on his own time, which we've done....it's just that...

Dusty, if Tyce will play with humans at all, I think a better way to bring him out of his shell is to play with him using long distance toys. Giving him good experiences with humans is key to get him to trust you, and these are experiences that will save you fingers. His willingness to come out of hiding and ask for pets suggests that he is starting to believe he may be safe, you just ...

MOL, and thats what happens, when you try and do a post, when you should be getting ready for work. Yup, this will work, Kitty Kat is the proof.

You're taking the right steps as you would for your dogs. Over on dogster, I heard of someone using a product called bitter apple. Would that work for cats?

I'm realizing that there's a problem with the "walk away" strategy. Cat follows me everywhere, and as I walk, he runs behind me jumping at my legs (fortunately without claws!) So I can't really walk away... he comes with me... everywhere. My only option is to chuck him out of the room and shut the door really quickly before he can run back in. Should I do that? Or is picking him up, ...

Throwing your cat about is not nice. Right, firstly, no throwing, tapping, spraying, etc. Play with him, with a ball or dangly toy, sething where your hands aren't directly involved. If he bites, then stop, just freeze, count to 5 then continue playing, he may initially escalate the biting, as he has learned that it is a succesful tactic to get his attention, just stick with it and keep counting ...

Gracie replied 3 months, 1 week ago
"Walk away" means you turn around and you don't pay him any attention until he is calm again. He will follow you around at first and try to get your attention, you just don't make eye contact or talk to him or pay attention to him until he is calm again. When he is calm, pet him very gently and fuss over him. It takes a long time with some cats. Before the behavior ends, he's also going to ...

Hummm....I am wondering if there is something going on outside that your humans don't know about? Like, another cat hanging around your barn? Are you....fixed? There are 5 of us in our 'colony' and we pretty much keep everything else off of the farm....but I do get upset when a strange cat thinks it can hang on our turf. Just a thought.

N, do you want to know my big feral taming secret? reading. I sit with a book where the cat is and read. ignor the cat. maybe say a few soft words, but not look at it. if you have other cats around pet them so they can show new kitty what to do. dont ever look directly at the cats eyes unless they trust you. a good thing is to breifly look at them, squint your eyes, look away. cats do this to other cats as if to say " yeah i see you, yeah...

I think the running away part is her inviting him to a game of chase. He won't hurt her, I promise. I went home at 9 week to a 1 1/2 years old big brother, and while mommy was always kind of tense about it, he never actually did much more than try to boss me around during our get to know you stage, and I mostly let him so we didn't have many problems. Later on, when he had already become friends Boris did smack me around kind of...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dyJvM073aM Earlier he done this and I thought he had died, it scared the hell out of me. He done the same thing later so I decided to film this as it was something I had not seen before, i'm not sure why he done this but i think he's just so tired after falling off the window all the time anytime he falls asleep. Very strange cat, I must say. Anybody have any ideas?

Climbing my pant legs!
Published (2009-12-06 08:42:00)
Actually, I haven't started trimming her claws yet... I wasn't going to start that until she's a little older and a little more adept at jumping. I don't want her to NOT be able to climb, since that's how she gets onto the bed, chairs, etc and she loves to play on the bed. I just don't want her to climb my PANTS.

It's good that your are taking her to a vet. When a cat is a whiner period (like I am), then it's just something you have to live with [mom's note: and if they are prone to meowing, they do it a lot more when they are anxious, as mine are after I get back home from a trip]. But if this was a sudden change, it may very well be her way to tell you that she doesn't feel well.

Excellent! I love the "I'm ignoring you" game. It is better, she usually won't bolt unless we look right at her.

LOL! That is so adorable about the bathtub thing. I'd be really happy if my cats wanted to take baths! Hehe. I haven't actually given my girls real baths before, just wiped them down with the "bath cloths" or whatever, but I'm sure they wouldn't like it too much. They love to get in the bathtub and lick the tub after I take a shower (LOL!), but they don't like too much water actually getting on them. But...

Yupp, this is how our cats play with each other and the dog. Just monitor it and make sure the dog isn't getting the wrong message.

Exactly. As long as they're both happy--which they clearly are!
