Thread: WEDDINGBELLS Message Board Community: thoughts on protein powders?

I'm starting to get back into a lifting routine at the gym, and was wondering what everyone's thoughts were about protein powders and shakes. Is this something necessary that will help with muscle development and definition, or just a waste of money? DH thinks the latter.

I don't think of them as a route to muscle development, just as part of my diet. When I started lifting regularly (and heavy) I would be starving about an hour after a workout - and devour anything in sight - completely ruining my diet. It is like everything else. Used in excess it is not a good thing. Excess protein can be very hard on your kidneys to try too excrete and unless you are doing heavy body building it is unlikely you would need extra protein if you are eating a well balanced diet. I used to skate 5 days per week, work out at the gym 3-4 days a week, and dance classes 2 days a week and I never required ...

A protein shake after a workout, especially a weight training heavy one, is a way for the body to take in the nutrients it needs for helping muscle repair and growth. It's not going to make you more muscular. A good balance of protein and carbs in the shake is a good idea. Avoid ones with too much fat. Also, beware of calories if you are trying to lose weight.
