Started 2 years, 2 months ago by snow patrol
Hi all, having problems with my current isp being slow and unreliable. Any way, i'm a heavy downloader, mainly bit torrent stuff. I'm considering vm cable xl 20meg. I live in pinner, harrow london. Any ideas if this is a good, reliable area? Also, Right outside my bedroom window is one of those green boxes - are those the cable boxes? If so, does being extremely close to one give me a good ...

The distance doesn't make a difference. They run fiber optical cable to the green boxes in the road, and then coaxial to the house. Hopefully someone in Harrow area can tell you if it is a good area or not. Personally I have had very very few problems with them where I am. Info on their fair use policy can be found here - http://abcde.co.uk/virginmedia/stm.html

In my experience no way! I tell you why soon as the switch over to Virgin Media they charged me £74 for a 20 meg line each month i would ring them tell them sort it out and they did while on the phone but next month same again after 3 months of ringing they said they would charge me £18.50 a month for the next 6 months but no i would pay them the £18.50 and get my bill saying i should of payed...

I been on them a month after coming from adsl max and i can't fault them, always hitting 2.3mbs(2300kbs) in the off peaks time and tbh i rarely dl much in peak times speed seems to drop to around 1.5mbs(1500kbs), i have tried the shapping side and it kicked in as it should but i was still getting 598kbs which is better than most get on adsl max and 200kbs faster than i used to get when i was on ...

Performance really depends on the local infrastructure and whether the UBR you will connect through is oversubscribed. Most customers do get good service, but a significant proportion don't. It's difficult to judge how many but a third of customers on the 20Mb service receiving poor service is probably a reasonable estimate. Personally I had near perfect service for 6 or 7 years and got the ...

hmmn, i'm a bit nervous to make the jump now. I think i'll contact ukonline and see if they can sort out my line.

In my opinion no, you really shouldn't. Can you get Be? If so that would be a much better choice.

I'm going to be ...

Be is the best option if you are close enough to the exchange and have a decent line, not everyone has that or can get Be, as i said above depends what vm service is like in your area i'm in the shapping time now and currently downloading some drivers and getting 1967kbs.

Just a thought - does the 30 day money back guarantee apply to the 20meg package? If so i could always keep my adsl, order virgin...then if virgin is great i could cancel my adsl, but if not i could invoke the money back guarantee within 30 days...right? or is that not the case?

traffic shaping aside VM cable is still miles ahead of ADSL in terms of reliability in most cases. ok so i used to get 20mbit 24/7 a few months ago whereas now the network is more saturated i only get it at night between the early hours and ~4pm, after that user contention seems to kick in no matter if shaping is in effect or not and i seem to hover between 12-16mbit ....hardly poor speed in reality. compared to LLU DSL i've had at a...

My parents are on Be 20meg, they get a 6meg connection. I am on VM cable 4meg, and get a 4 meg connection. I'd say get ADSL if you're close to the local exchange, however since moving to a cable area i would never want to go back to ADSL. Just remember, just because VM customer services often sucks, it doesn't mean it's not a very very good internet connection.
