Basi Italia is one of my favorite dining spots in Columbus, It has a very New York Hells Kitchen feel. The staff is great, the food amazing and the dining experience is unlike no other in Columbus. The patio on a warm night is beyond words. Try the Osso Buco- Melts in your mouth.
Music (bass) described as "irritating", while the "menu aims lower than it used to..." Other descriptions of food include phrases such as "...neither dull nor exciting...", "...masks some subtleties...", "...house-made, unlike the smoked chicken ravioli...", "...unneeded dabs of goat cheese..." and "...difficult to focus on the lobster aspects...", many of which seem to be backhanded compliments...
Just saying wrote: Only a handful of downright positive comments in this review - yet the reviewer gives four stars? What am I missing here? This restaurant has long been on my wish list of places to go with a special someone, but is it good or not? I'm somehow thinking a place meriting four stars might also merit a review indicative of said rating. Please forgive my confusion. JS, ...
I could have written the same review by glancing at the menu online. Other than the description of the music and calling the place small, you gave no real indication that you'd actually EATEN at Basi Italia. It's not as if I'm the place's biggest fan, but come on! This is the Dispatch and when I read a food review I'd like to come away with the sense that I know more now than I did before. In ...
Critiquing a wine as the last line in a restaurant review? "The winning cannoli ($6 for two) are off the beaten path." What does this mean?! I like Basi. I like that the chef uses seasonal local ingredients and has some unique fresh dishes. I like that he supports local food initiatives with donations and his personal time. I love the kale salad which is unique, inspired and something I have ...
Much thanks to all for your input! I gather that I should quit whining, dust off my credit card, prepare for potentially lame service, find a date (easily the most difficult of these tasks) and simply go myself. I very much appreciate the perspective offered by you who have dined at Basi, as well as the suggestion to check out Yelp. Cheers!
JS, While you're at it, call up Robin Davis (Dispatch food editor) and ask why we the Dispatch still pays for Jon C.'s useless non-reviews. Isn't it time Columbus got a reviewer willing and able to write a professional, informative and useful restaurant review? Luv, JCS
