Thread: Valve co-opts L4D2 boycott by giving leaders free trip to HQ

Started 3 months ago by JournalBot
Two leaders of a group boycotting Left 4 Dead 2 were flown to Valve's offices to see the game... and they returned with a very different take on the boycott. The community seems less than happy with the result, and accuse their leaders of being bought off with a little personal attention. How Valve got the boycotters on its side. Read the whole story

Valve's best move is to ignore these lame complaints and go ahead with the release. Anyone who bought L4D when it first came out already got their money's worth, including several significant content upgrades to a game that already boasts significant replayability even for a multiplayer experience. That said, these guys are clearly sellouts. Suffering through a 2 hour plane flight? Pfft.

quote: "Not to be the bearer of bad news, but unless something very major changes, there is 0% chance of a discount on L4D2," Walking_Target wrote after the visit. There is also little chance of full compatibility with the first game at launch. Hrm.. sounds like there's little chance a lot of people will be buying it too :-\

I don't know what they're whinging about anyway, I love L4D and have thoroughly enjoyed it. The difficulty levels and different game modes have given me many hours of replayability. The first one was worth every cent, even as it stands right now.

I honestly do not know what is up with the community being anti Valve over a new release of a game...can someone explain it to me? I played L4D and while it is fun it was not enough for me to shell money out of my pocket to play it. Mind that does not mean I pirated it...honestly I would not begin to know how I would do that. I just played on a friend's computer just one level and while it was ...

Okay, two guys are not boycotting it now. How is this stopping the boycott at all? These "leaders" will make all their minions fall in line or what? I don't get it. And neither does any of the other boycott people either it seems. So...these two "leaders" are kicked to the curb in the boycott. I still don't get how convincing two guys out of literally thousands of people is going to turn ...

" "No, we didn't pay for flights or hotels, and we are fully aware of how that looks. However, anybody who has had to spend more than 2 hours in an airplane can tell you it's no treat." Uh, he's just being sarcastic/facetious right? He's not seriously claiming that accepting a free flight and hotel (not to mention a tour by Newell) is "harder than it looks",right?

If he regularly travels for business purposes then no, he's not being facetious. Anybody who has will tell you that planes and hotels get pretty tired pretty quick - ...

How DARE they create a sequel to a game I like. Those bastards.

As long as they don't sell out to Activision the way Blizzard did...

I think the issue is that when L4D was originally released, everyone commented that it wasn't quite finished yet. Valve's response was "Don't worry. We'll be adding a stack of DLC!"... Aside from one minor update, really the DLC never turned up. They decided to make a sequel instead. I agree with the previous posters however. I more than got my moneys worth out of the first title and will be ...

People keep comparing L4D/L4D to Half-Life 1/2. That's asinine. Why? Because L4D uses most of the same assets, codebase as the sequel. More amazingly, the sequel will ship BEFORE even the first year of L4D has been out. People have painted "boycotters" as idiots, called them vicious, attacked them, their families and whatnot, all the while ignoring a large mass of sheep bleating about how much Valve has worked on L4D 2....

Why should they be required to make LD4 and its sequel compatible? Is HL content compatible with HL2? Does Madden '09 interoperate...
