Thread: Valve Adjustments, have you had it done?

Started 4 months, 1 week ago by VEGASRIDER
Just curios how many members have had their valve adjustments done or measured. Not asking how to do it, but just would like for those folks who had it done to let me know if they did it themselves or if they had a shop do it, and if so, how much did it cost.

Mine are due at my next major service (24K miles) I'll have a bigger bike ( FZ1 ) by then so I'm afraid I probably won't be able to help much. FZ1-Forum gal_register('gal_1_241862', '1', '1', '0', '0', '0');

I've checked mine twice, most recently 3 weeks ago @ 52K miles. No adjustments were needed either occasion, but a few were at the lower limit this time.

52k miles with no adjustments? Superb, thats impressive for any bike, especially such a high reving one the 24k seems a bit conservative then

I am up for it in 500 miles. Not sure I'm going to do it right at 24,000 on the dot. I will probably wait until 25 or 26,000. It costs a lot to have a shop do it. And I'm not comfortable doing it myself. It sounds like waiting an extra 1 to 2,000 miles won't be a bad thing (but I could be wrong).

No, in order to save money I sell my bikes and buy a new one prior to any major service that is required.

I guess the outcome is still the same, huh?

I did it just a few days ago, only 1 exhaust valve was tight. Everything else was still in spec.

VEGASRIDER replied 4 months, 1 week ago
Still waiting for the member to post that they had it done by some shop, I want to know how much they paid, or how much should it cost.

I got mine from motorcycle superstore for about $80.

I was at the Yamaha dealer today in Roseville, Ca. (a shop I trust) and asked the service dept. what a valve adjust would cost. His reply was 2.5 to 5 hours depending on need. Shop rate is $95.00 an hour. So we are talking around $250.00 to close to $500.00 if really out of spec. Ouch... it costs to have fun.

Re: Valve Adjustments, have you had it done? I was at my local independent shop the other day getting some tires mounted, and I inquired about a valve check. The mechanic said it'a bout 4 hours of labor for the FZ6. Now, compare that to a Kawasaki Concours 14. He said they won't even do them anymore. It takes over 14 hours! __________________ Bryan

I plan on doing this when it comes time, but I like to be prepared. I'd rather have a kit on hand and change out the shims then and there, then have to order and wait... I came across one vendor who may have a kit available. Procycle - Hotcams Valve Shim Kits & Refills

Yamaha doesn't sell a kit, just individual shims. However, these are the same size and numbering system as a particular Honda shim style, and they may sell a kit. In my case, I had quite a few on hand from previous engine services, but didn't need to swap any. Based on what I measured recently, I anticipate adjusting 3-6 valves next time.

You would need the R6 kit, correct?
