I have used my geniune VAG-COM cable on my buddy's Impala to diagnose a CEL using Ross-tech's software. Can't tell you if shareware works as a generic scanner or not

It may work in getting you a code but im not sure if every manufacturer uses the same code for the same issue. I took my friends Altima to autozone to get it scanned (it had a check engine light on) and they printed out this page that had different manufacturers listed and what the code meant for each manufacturer. Hope this helps.
