Thread: Using ramps? - WheelchairJunkie.com Message Board

Started 3 months, 2 weeks ago by Pottaroo
Hi I'm learning to use my Q614 but ramps are giving me trouble. When I'm going up or down I'm having trouble controlling the front castors, nearly wobbling off the side. What is the better technigue - go on P1 or would it be easier with a bit more speed on P2. Maybe I'm being too cautious on P1 and it's harder to control.

When traveling down a steep ramp, typically one should proceed with as little forward power as possible, to where the resistance of the motors slows the powerchair, using the joystick namely to steer side-to-side. Also, when traveling up a steep ramp, minimal speed should be used, as well. Slower speeds simply offer better control for such maneuvering. Lastly, please ensure that these ramps ...

Hi Pataroo, I had trouble controlling my chair, it's a 4000R, because the program is set for a delay before it activates in turns to right and left, and then it would come on like gang busters. This caused me to wobble back and fourth trying to regain straight line motion. I used to run into door frames and so on. I had my DME cut the delay OUT. And no more trouble. Mark has it right about using ...

Was attempting to get onto the train (it was raining) and the wheels just spun at the edge of the ramp, would it be best to have the power on P4 and the speed right down. Would that give enough grunt? I only had the power set to P2.

Pottaroo, based on your description, it sounds like the ramp transition (where the bottom of the ramp meets the flat ground), was too steep. When a ramp transition is too steep, the front casters raise to their limits, then the drive wheels lose traction -- and the wet weather likely exacerbated the issue, as well. Thank you.

Nah, I reckon it's how I'm driving it. People go up and down the train ramps all the time in chairs, including me on my scooter.

Hi Anne I'm in Gippsland in Morwell, it's a very low platform, you even need assistance in a manual unless you've got arms like Arnie. I'll be trying again next week with the trainer from Yooralla and the supplier, I reckon I just need more practise and some intestinal fortitude and it'll be right. Haven't tried any of the suburban stations yet, but can hardly wait to go to places I haven't ...

Hi Judi, glad you are getting some Yooralla training, if it is Mary she will teach you everything you need and want to know, best person to help you get over any problems. Actually i think we can get up the ramps easier than manual wheelies - we have more torque!!!! my friends need the driver to give them a push up the ramp. Now a question for you -- do you come to Melbourne by vline? I went to ...

Hi Anne Yep, I only moved to the country in 2002, was a Moorabbin girl for all of my life and I use the vline trains. I can get thru the doors ok but don't go down to the seats behind the disabled loo cos it's too narrow, have to go thru to the other carriage where it's much wider. The connies were always impressed with my scooter driving cos I could squeeze that 4 wheel beast into the tiny ...

Hi Judi, Now you tell me about the wrong end of the carriage!!! I Do not know you can manoover a scooter in that small space---very impressive. I am in Ormond, lived there for ever, so we have probably traveled over the same roads. Good luck at Dandi Hospital, hate that place. Have fun with Mary next week, has she helped you before,I owe her my freedom. 28deg. down here for the next few days ...

Ohhhh I miss the suburbs so much!!! And SOUTHLAND even more lol. Dandi was a drag, saw the surgeon (nice guy by the way) and am on the list for my next op - yay NOT!! Mary and Warren (from the place I got the chair) came out and did some tweaking so it's running much better now. The factory settings for speed levels were not right but it's ok now. Went into Melb last Thursday coz I had to ...
